IT37265: DURING CERTAIN RUN-TIME CONDITIONS BACKUP VM OPERATIONS CAN FAIL WITH ANS9403E AND ANS4174E RC=7302

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• A virtual machine (VM) backup with IBM Spectrum Protect for
  Virtual Environments - Data Protection for VMware can fail if
  all the following three conditions are met:
  1) VMware Changed Block Tracking (CBT) for the VM needs to be
     reset,
  2) a VMware snapshot already exists for the VM,
  3) the Spectrum Protect Client option VMNOCBTcontinue is set to
     "Yes".
  
  Messages like the following will be logged:
  
  (command output or dsmsched.log)
  ANS9403E IBM Spectrum Protect has detected that the data to
   back up does not match the list of data to back up that was
   sent  from the virtual machine. The backup of 'VMName'
   cannot continue.
  ANS4174E Full VM backup of VMware Virtual Machine 'VMName'
   failed with RC=7302 mode=Incremental Forever - Incremental,
   target node name='DATA_CENTER_NODE', data mover node
   name='DATA_MOVER_NODE'

Local fix

• Run a backup of the affected VM with mode=iffull and disable
  the option vmnocbtcontinue.

Problem conclusion

• VMNOCBTcontinue behaviour has been enhance to process alllocated
  blocks only using new vmware QueryAllocatedBlocks function.
