Error description

  • Using IBM Spectrum Protect Plus, the backup of Microsoft SQL or
    Exchange databases might stop.
Here is an example for a Microsoft Exchange backup with the
following messages seen in the job log :

This APAR applies if in the job log bundle collected from the
User Interface by clicking on the button 'Download.zip' the
    following lines are found :

<timestamp> .. INFO cbt - To parse backupmetadata file
                         [c:\ProgramData\SPP\mnt\SPPB_
                         <vSnapVolumeName>\appMetadata.json]
<timestamp> .. DEBUG winagent - Command output [Parsing
                         exception: [c:\ProgramData\SPP\mnt\SPPB_
                         <vSnapVolumeName>\appMetadata.json(51):
                         garbage after data]]

The above error is encountered when the IBM Spectrum Protect
Plus Microsoft SQL Agent or IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Exchange
Agent file 'appMetadata.json' cannot be accessed.
For example if the Microsoft SQL or Exchange host security
policy prevents from accessing any file on the root location of
a volume or an antivirus program is locking access to the file
    or file path.
In the above example, the file "appMetadata.json" is located in
the root location of the vSnap iSCSI presented volume
    "SPPB_<vSnapVolumeName>".
The Microsoft SQL or Exchange Spectrum Protect Plus Agent
mounts the iSCSI vSnap volumes in "c:\ProgramData\SPP\mnt"

IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Versions Affected:
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.5 and higher

    | MDVREGR 10.1.4 5737SPLUS |

    Initial Impact: Medium

Additional Keywords: SPP, SPPLUS, TS004620323, antivirus,
                         permission, MSSQL, Exchange

Local fix

  • Review the Microsoft SQL or Exchange host security rules to
allow access to files that will be generated during backups in
    the path "c:\programdata\SPP".
If applicable, exclude path "c:\programdata\SPP" from any
    antivirus scanner.

Problem conclusion

  • The backup metadata file was moved to a subfolder on the backup
target volume, so backups run successfully.
