IT35666: ORACLE BACKUP REPORTS RETURN CODE 255 ERROR WHEN TRYING TO DELETE THE BACKUP COPY OF CONTROL FILE AT <DISKGROUP> FOLDER

APAR status

Error description

  • Oracle backup is successful with status as COMPLETED. However,
    job log shows return code 255 error when trying to delete the
    backup copy of control file at <DISKGROUP> folder.

    '+DATA/spp_<sql-instance>_SPP_BACKUP_xxxx.ctl'
    
    IBM Spectrum Protect Plug Oracle agent creates a backup copy of
    the controlfile at <DISKGROUP>/<filename>, then copies it to
    /tmp/<filename> using asmcmd. After that Oracle agent copies
    from /tmp/<filename> to /mnt/spp/<backupPath>/. All the copies
    are successful, but later when trying to remove the first copy
    created at <DISKGROUP>/filename using asmcmd, the remove
    operation is successful but it returns a non-zero code, so this
    causes a warning/error to be displayed in the job log. Despite
    the error, the job does complete successfully. Return code 255
    means an external user error, but in this case Oracle agent
    invokes the command correctly and manages to remove the file.
    It is just a error display issue without causing any problem.
