Error description

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Plus documentation information needs to be
improved about space requirements for guest file indexing.
The current 'File indexing and restore requirements' just say :
"The amount of free space that is required for the metadata in
the catalog depends on the total number of files in the
     environment.
To catalog 1 million files, the catalog volume in the IBM
Spectrum Protect Plus server requires roughly 350 MB of free
     space per retained version.
The space used by file indexing metadata is reclaimed when the
     corresponding backup instances expire."

There is no information on what exact IBM Spectrum Protect Plus
host filespace the above rule applies.
The file catalog is stored on the Spectrum Protect Plus host in
the Lucene database under filespace /data3.
That is the one to size according to the above rule of thumb.

    For example :

Two VM guests with each guest having 10 million files.
Each guest is backed up daily.
    Retention is 30 days.

In that case, applying the rule gives :

    Number of file catalog entries = 2 * 10 million * 30 versions
                                   = 600 million files
    Approximate space needed in /data3 = 600 * 350 MB = 210 GB

    Additional considerations :
    - During indexing, the results returned from the client are
temporarily stored in filespace /data2 before they are
      ingested into the Lucene database.
The default space in /data2 is usually sufficient, but this
might need to be increased slightly to accommodate the data
(using the same rule of thumb) to ingest if lots of jobs are
      running at the same time.
    - The Lucene DB has an overall limit of about 2 billion entries

Problem conclusion

  • Additional information has been added to the File Indexing and
Restoring requirements topic concerning the space requirements
in the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus User's and Installation Guide
and the IBM Documentation Center for version 10.1.8 at the
    following location:
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6416689

These additional requirements also apply to IBM Spectrum Protect
    Plus versions 10.1.6 and 10.1.7:
The amount of free space that is required for the metadata in
the catalog depends on the total number of files in the
environment. To catalog 1 million files, the catalog volume in
the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server requires roughly 350 MB of
free space per retained version. For example, 2 virtual machines
that each contain 10 million files are backed up daily with a
retention of 30 days. The resulting number of catalog entries is
    2 * 10 million * 30 days for a total of 600 million entries.
Therefore, the approximate space needed is 600 * 350 MB which is
210 GB. The space that is used by file indexing metadata is
reclaimed when the corresponding backup instances expire.
During file indexing, results are temporarily stored in /data2
prior to being saved in the catalog. If there are several jobs
running concurrently, the size of /data2 may need to be
    increased from the default size.
