Error description

  • When trying to restore a Hyper-V guest, the Client crashes
    while creating the VM.

    The crash dump call stack will look
    like the following:

    dsmagent!HyperVDisk::SetVirtualDiskMetadata+0xc8

    dsmagent!vmHyperVCreateVhdDisks+0xa14

    dsmagent!vmHyperVRestoreConfigAndCreateVM+0x22c

    dsmagent!vmHyperVVddkOptRestoreVM+0x636

    dsmagent!vmHyperVVddkRestoreVM+0x2c2

    dsmagent!vmHyperVRestoreVM+0x29d
     dsmagent!DoVMRestore+0x2c9

    dsmagent!DccRestoreConsumer::ProcessRequest+0x1195

    dsmagent!DccRestoreConsumer::HandleQueue+0x7c7

    dsmagent!DccRestoreConsumer::DoThread+0x1ed

    dsmagent!startThread+0x117
     ucrtbase!thread_start<unsigned int
    (__cdecl*)(void * __ptr64)>+0x3a

    kernel32!BaseThreadInitThunk+0x14

    ntdll!RtlUserThreadStart+0x21

    The issue happens when
    attempting to restore custom user metadata for the guest
    disk.
    Guest disk user metadata can be added by vendors during
    deployment or update of Hyper-V guests.
    See Microsoft
    information about that feature :
    https://social.technet.microsof
    t.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4353ff3c-6c0c-45fc-b0f7-afc2765
    811d6/how-to-insert-custom-metadata-into-vhdx?forum=winserverhyp
    erv

    If there's no metadata defined for the disk, the restore
    can proceed. Otherwise the Client will crash.
