Error description

  • Error Description:

Duplicate Filesystem or Logical Volume Group names can cause
mount of Linux Vm to fail. You may see the following error in
the Restore or Vmware plugin UI:

An error occurred while retrieving directory Information

This issue can occur if the Linux mount proxy vm and Linux vm
being mounted are cloned from the same virtual machine.

Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environment Linux Mount Proxy
serviceability should be improved to detect and report
possible environmental problems caused by duplicated
    Filesystem UUID or LVG name.

Spectrum Protect Versions: 81L and 71L

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics (If Applicable)

    Initial Impact: Medium

Additional Keywords: File Level Restore FLR Mount Linux UUID
                          LVG Logical Volume Group Name

Local fix

  • Local Fix:

Do not use same Linux Virtual guest template for the Linux Mount
Proxy and any Linux Vm that will be mounted

Create new Linux mount Proxy VM that has unique Filesystem
UUID and Logical Volume Group Names.

Change Filesystem UUID and Logical Volume Group Names
on Linux Mount proxy to be unique in your environment

Problem conclusion

  • Mount operation can fail in case the LVM volume being processed
has UUID collision with the mount proxy system.
Currently, the problem can only be identified with Spectrum
Protect service tracing on Linux mount proxy.
The fix improves serviceability by adding following warning
message to UI console and to mount proxy?s dsmerror.log.
ANS3188W A duplicate UUID exists for LVM device ?<varname
    id=?arg1?>new_device_name</varname>?.
The device cannot be mounted. As a result, files from this
    device will not be restored.
