IT31006: SPACE MANAGEMENT CLIENT PREMIGRATION PROCESSING MIGHT SUCCEED IN SPITE OF AN INTERMITTENT ANS9513E

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• IBM Spectrum Protect Space Management (HSM) Client may ignore
  ANS9513E error caused by a temporary IBM Spectrum Scale (former
  GPFS) error during a file premigration ("dsmmigrate -p"
  command). As a result, the premigration succeeds. However, the
  affected file stays 'resident'. The file and its content can
  still be accessed. Also, all subsequent tries to (pre)migrate
  the same file are failing due to:
  ANS1228E Sending of object 'file' failed.
  ANS9256E File 'file' is currently opened by another process.
  
  Customer / Support Diagnostics:
  
  Environment:
  LTFS EE 1.3.0.5 (+ dsmmigrate efix for APAR IT29293)
  HSM 8.1.7.0 (bundled in LTFS EE package)
  GPFS 5.0.3.3, RHEL 7.5 x86_64
  Issue can be seen in all Scale environments.
  
  - Check whether file is resident, migrated or premigrated using
  the HSM dsmls command;
  - Check whether the resident file has both the IBMPMig and the
  IBMObj attributes and the GPFS DMAPI manager regions set at the
  same time using the GPFS mmlsattr command like:
     mmlsattr -d -L <file> | grep -i IBMPMig
     mmlsattr -d -L <file> | grep IBMObj
     mmlsattr -d -L <file> | grep gpfs.dmapi.region
  - If these attributes are set, then this means customer is
  facing this issue.

Local fix

• To recover the affected file, i.e. to clean up its inconsistent
  HSM DMAPI attributes, make a copy of the affected file, unlink
  the original file and rename the copy to the original name.

Problem conclusion

• After the fix, ANS9513E error will be honored by the dsmmigrate
  command. In particular, HSM premigration ('dsmmigrate -p'
  command) will be aborted due to a ANS9513E if there is an
  intermittent Spectrum Scale DMAPI issue during the premigration
  processing.
