Error description

  • dsmc and dsmadmc hang when prompting for the password on Windows
    10 build 1803.
    Additionally, CTRL-C will not terminate the process. Use CTRL-
    BREAK, kill the process, or close the command prompt.
    
    This problem also occurs when using WinPE to recover a Windows
    system if the Windows ADK version 1803 was used to build the
    WinPE recovery image.

Local fix

  • Work around for dsm:
    Set PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE in the dsm.opt file.
    Use the Spectrum Protect GUI interface to sign into the Protect
    server.
    This will generate and store the password.   dsmc can now be
    used.
    
     There is no work around for dsmadmc.  A different machine must
    be used that is not at the 1803 level.
    
    In a WinPE setting, use the 'dsmcutil updatepw' command to
    set the password. After booting into WinPE, setting up the
    network, and configuring the DSM_* environment variables, but
    before running 'dsmc query session' to test connectivity to the
    IBM Spectrum Protect server, run these commands:
    
      set DSMI_CONFIG=%DSM_CONFIG%
      set DSMI_DIR=%DSM_DIR%
      set DSMI_LOG=%DSM_LOG%
      dsmcutil updatepw /node:yournodename /password:yourpassword
    
    Then proceed with the restore.
    
    Note: Make sure that PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE is configured
    in the dsm.opt file.
    
    Alternatively, use the ADK version 1703 to build the WinPE image
    since the Windows defect that triggers this problem does not
    exist in that version.
