IT08191: Application error gets logged in Windows event log for Common Agent managed systems with Source: PerfNet and Event ID: 2006

APAR status

  • Closed as documentation error.

Error description

  • For Common Agent (CAS) managed systems running on Windows
operating system with more than 32 processors, user may
periodically see an application error with ID 2006 and source as
PerfNet getting logged in Windows application event log.

     Source: PerfNet
     Event ID: 2006
Unable to read Server Queue performance data from the Server
    service.
The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the
    status
code, the second four bytes contains the IOSB.Status and the
    next four
     bytes contains the IOSB.Information.

    Impact:
User will get confused with the Application Error for CAS
service getting logged into Windows Event log. Also, CAS
service may or may not work correctly.

Local fix

  • This is a permanent limitation for Common Agent managed systems.
To resolve this issue, user needs to restrict the number of
processor cores to no more than 32 for the target system.

Problem summary

  • On Windows systems, there is a limitation on the Microsoft
performance provider PerfNet.dll. It can only support a maximum
    of 32 processors.

With IBM Systems Director (ISD) Common Agent (CAS) being a 32
bit application, each time CAS service is starting, the resource
monitor will be initialized and use this provider to get the
number of processors. If more than 32 processors are available
for the system, a Windows application error (ID:2006) will be
logged into the Windows event log.

The mentioned scenario will be included in the IBM Systems
    Director online documentation.
