Error description
IBM Systems Director (ISD) Update Manager may overwrite an existing /etc/niminfo file Updating AIX by using Update Manager (UM) in ISD will remove original /etc/niminfo file and produce a new /etc/niminfo file. But for VMC, if /etc/niminfo file exists before using VMC, VMC will save /etc/niminfo as backup. After VMC finishes work, VMC will restore the /etc/niminfo file. Impact: Users encountering this issue will lose original configuration file /etc/niminfo .
Local fix
Before using UM to update AIX, run command /usr/bin/cp /etc/niminfo /etc/niminfo.bak to save /etc/niminfo file. After updating completes, run command /usr/bin/cp /etc/niminfo.bak /etc/niminfo to restore the /etc/niminfo file.
Problem summary
If /etc/niminfo exists before using UM to update AIX, UM will remove the /etc/niminfo and produce a new /etc/niminfo. It will not restore the original /etc/niminfo file. UM?s update processing, when dealing with existing /etc/niminfo files, will be enhanced to better handle the restoring of the original /etc/niminfo file. This issue will be fixed in a future release of the product.
