Error description
The Documentation on updating the TSM device driver on HP-UX is not up to date / detailed enough because the handling has changed starting with TSM version 5.2.2.0 which is the first version shipping the dynamically loadable TSM device driver. . The HP/UX server quick start manual describes that if the TSM 5.2.2 device driver should be installed previous versions must be uninstalled. . Extract "IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for HP-UX: Quick Start", Chapter 2: Installing ITSM, Performing a migrate install: "3. If you currently have a version 5 Tivoli Storage Manager Device Driver installed, you must uninstall it using swremove (an HP-UX utility) before you install the version 5.2.2 Device Driver." One more thing is that de-installing the device driver and rebooting the machine (as required when 1st time updating to 5.2.2.0) causes all device special files to be lost. Although this is intentionally clear this is NOT documented but should be so that customers can save information about their devices before performing these steps. . If TSM 5.2.2 is already installed it's not necessary to uninstall the device driver in case of a level upgrade. This should be described more detailed in Quick Start manual: Appendix D: Applying IBM TSM updates: Installing an IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server PTF. . In addition the Quick Start still include notes that the HP-UX kernel will be rebuild during device driver install causing a system reboot. This is no longer true and should be removed or documented more clearly which level of the device driver do / do NOT require a reboot. Example: Chapter 2: Installing IBM Tivoli Storage Manager; page 22/23 (hardcopy): 4. Use the SWINSTALL command in non-interactive or interactive mode. a. To install non-interactively: Enter the following command and continue at step 15 on page 24: swinstall -s /cdrom <filesetname> Where <filesetname> is one or more fileset names listed in Table 8. Note: To install all server files, specify TIVsmS32 or TIVsmS64. Choose only one device driver file as appropriate for your system. >>> Attention: When you install the device driver, the kernel will be rebuilt, resulting in a system reboot. <<< . Starting with TSM 5.2.2.0 the kernel does NOT need to be rebuild and therefore NO reboot is required anymore (last reboot is needed to remove TSM device drivers prior to 5.2.2.0). . The documentation on how to apply service to the TSM device driver on HP-UX needs to be more detailed.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All Tivoli Storage Manager users of * * versions 5.2 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The information describing device * * support in the Migrating to IBM * * Tivoli Storage Manager Version * * 5.2 section of the 5.2 HP_UX * * Installation Guide was not correct * * in that it did not describe the * * dynamically loaded device * * driver, available beginning with * * TSM Version 5.2.2, which eliminates * * the need to reboot the system. * * This information * * has been updated and clarified. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** There are five separate problems. See the error description to see a description of the errors. The following text will be changed in the next release of the manuals. Fix for #1: A new section was written for Device Support, in response to APAR IC4113, and covers updating the TSM device driver during migration from older levels of TSM. The section states: "Beginning with Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.2.2, the driver is dynamically loaded, eliminating the need to reboot the system." Fix for #2: Added this warning to Performing a Migrate Install, step 3: "Warning: Ensure that you read "Migrating from Version 5.2.1 or Earlier" prior to performing this step, because all tsmscsi device system files will be lost when this step is performed." Fix for #3: Added a new section, "Migrating from Version 5.2.2" in the Installation chapter. "If Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.2.2 is already installed, it is not necessary to uninstall the device driver." Fix for #4: Under "Installing IBM Tivoli Storage Manager", under step 4A, replaced "Attention: When you install the device driver, the kernel will be rebuilt, resulting in a system reboot" with "Attention: Beginning with Tivoli Storage Manager 5.2.2, the kernel does not need to be rebuilt and therefore no reboot is required (the last reboot is needed to remove Tivoli Storage Manager device drivers prior to 5.2.2)." Fix for #5: See fix for #1, a new section was written. This documentation is currently projected to be fixed in the next release of TSM. Note that this is subject to change at the discretion of IBM.
