Error description

  • GSD / VARIABLE OFFSET / VARIABLE OFFSET
    CREATE NON-TANGENT SURFACES.
    .
    SCENARIO:
    1.Open provided CATPart.
2.Click on Variable offset icon. Variable offset
    definition dialog box appears.
    3.Select Surface.4 as Global Surface.
    4.Select the Boundary.3 and Value as 0mm.
5.Select the Surface.4 and Value as Variable.
6.Select the Boundary.4 and Value as minus 2mm
    (- 2 mm).
7.Turn off the Constant Offset if you want input
    variable in the Value field.
8.Click OK to Variable offset definition dialog box.
9.Select view mode as Shading with Edges without
    Smooth Edges.
    .
    OBSERVATION:
Five Internal Edges appear. It means Continuous in
    tangency is inferior.
    .

Problem conclusion

  • THIS PROBLEM IS PERMANENT RESTRICTION IN
    CATIA
    .
    Incident Diagnosis
The variable offset surface is not smooth. Some
    edges becomes sharp.
    .
    Restriction Explanation:
Variable offest does not preserve the tangency
continuity for surface with no curvature continuity.
    .
The tangency gap depend of two number :
the product between the curvature discontinuities
and offset value (= around 0.25 here).
the slope of the law of offset value (high here : one
    warning "high variation" is diplayed).
If one of them is low then the tangency gap must
    be low.
    .
    By-Pass:
Perform one healing with tangency on the variable
offset surface with the following parameters
    - Continuity : Tangent
    - Tangency Angle : 3.2 deg (> tangency gap)
    .
