AIX ESA Agent: Leftover /esa directory with Eclipse plugins

Question & Answer

Question

I discovered an old Eclipse plugins directory in /esa
  • /esa/runtime/esssvr/eclipse/plugins
The ' lslpp -w /esa' command does not list an owning file set. The bos.esagent 7.1.5.0 file set installed its instance to /usr/esa/runtime. Why does this directory exist, and can it be removed?

Answer

The /esa directory was installed, and used, by older bos.esagent (< 7.1.5). This /esa directory is not used by esagent in 7.1.5 and 7.2.
The /esa/runtime/esssvr/eclipse/plugins were unpacked from /usr/esa/eclipse/plugins JAR files, during installation of bos.esagent < 7.1.5.
If you are at 7.1.5 or higher, the /esa directory might have been left on the system during the update.  You can remove  /esa/runtime/esssvr. This directory, and its content is no longer used.

We do not have any indication that the top /esa directory has been used by any other AIX application. This packaging is being reviewed so the entire /esa directory will be removed in a future update. It is unlikely that other applications write to this directory, but AIX cannot prove this yet.
You can check whether any files have been written to /esa in recent months, or even the last year, depending on when bos.esagent 7.1.5 or 7.2.0 was installed. To check for any files created in the last year:

# find /esa -type f -mtime -365
Any new files would need to be investigated. The bos.esagent levels 7.1.5 and later do not use this directory.
If no new files exist, you can remove /esa.
