Troubleshooting
Problem
This technote explains how to resolve an issue that can arise on a UNIX or Linux VOB server that gets upgraded to IBM Rational ClearCase 8.0.x from ClearCase 7.X.
Symptom
When you try to create a VOB on a newly upgraded ClearCase 8.0 VOB server, vob_server process cores and the following error is returned:
cleartool: Error: Problem starting vob_server for vob myserver.mydom.com:/vobstore/my_test.vbs
cleartool: Error: See albd or vob error logs on host myserver.mydom.com
cleartool: Error: Error initializing vob_server.
cleartool: Error: Unable to create versioned object base "/vobstore/my_test.vbs".
When ClearCase is started, existing VOBs may come up in locked state and core is generated when unlock is attempted.
Cause
albd.conf file preserved from an earlier version of ClearCase can cause this problem. Although the upgrade procedure indicates that you can preserve the albd.conf file from earlier versions of ClearCase, the format has actually changed and the older versions of the file are incompatible with ClearCase 8.0.X.
Environment
Upgrade of VOB server to ClearCase 8.0 or after porting 7.1.2 configuration files to new server.
Diagnosing The Problem
vob_server process cores are generated every time a VOB is created or mounted.
Resolving The Problem
Restore the default albd.conf file that gets created when ClearCase 8.0.0.X is installed or reinstall ClearCase and do not copy the older albd.conf file from the preserved artifacts from earlier versions of ClearCase.
