About DOORS archives and temporary data files

Question & Answer

Question

What are the ar.zip files in the IBM Rational DOORS data directory?

Cause

You need to clean up the database and notice some large zip files that do not exist in other DOORS databases.

Answer

DOORS uses compressed obfuscated archive files to create archives of modules or projects. These archives however do not use .zip file extensions. Project archives use .dpa, module archive use .dma.
There is one other archive extension, .dua, which is used for DOORS user archives."ar*.zip" files are temporary files created during an archive or restore process. If the process is successful, the files are removed at the end. However, if the process fails these zip files remain and might cause problems when you attempt to archive or restore in the database. These files are not useable and should be removed from the data directory.

Another possible reason there could be .zip files in your data area is because an administrator may have "zipped up" data files in a compressed archive for back up.But these should not be stored in the data directory you are backing up and generally are not named "ar.zip".
