About Credential Scan Rate

Question & Answer

Question

What is the Credential Scan Rate and how can it potentially impact the performance of IBM® Rational® ClearCase® when working on Microsoft® Windows®?

Answer

Overview

The Credential Scan Rate is used to specify the time in minutes that MVFS credentials for a user remain valid.

When you log into Windows, your credentials become available for file access in dynamic views, and are cached for use in determining access rights to objects under ClearCase control.

At each time interval specified by Credential Scan Rate, the Credentials Manager service:

  1. Checks the credentials of the logged in account against the cached credentials
  2. Updates the credentials cache (as needed) for the currently logged in account
  3. Deletes the MVFS credentials cache of users who have logged off since the last credentials check

Credential Scan Rate Interval

  • The default scan rate interval is 60 minutes
  • The minimum scan rate interval is 5 minutes
  • The maximum scan rate interval is 10,080 minutes, which equates to one week

Credentials Scan Rate and Performance

Increasing the scan rate interval to a larger value reduces the number of times that the credentials cache is emptied, which will also decrease the number of times the user's credentials are periodically checked.

Each credentials check requires an RPC (Remote Procedure Call) over the network from the client to a domain controller and back. In a high traffic environment, an hourly frequency for credentials checking can contribute to a delay in response time when working in a ClearCase dynamic view.

Modifying the Credential Scan Rate

Go to Start > Control Panel > double-click the ClearCase icon to open the ClearCase Properties > select the MVFS tab:
