Problem

Troubleshoot serial and parallel port issues on your IBM server or IntelliStation workstation

Resolving The Problem

  1. Ensure that the latest BIOS code is installed for your system. This will ensure proper operation of the ports to allow the ports to properly connect to and communicate with a serial or parallel device.

  2. Remove any switch boxes, cable extensions, or port sharing equipment between the system and the device. Cable extensions and Keyboard/Video/Mouse (KVM) type switch boxes are not supported.

  3. Verify that the cable being used meets the specification for the device being connected (e.g. for parallel devices such as a printer, use a IEEE-1284 cable that is no longer than 6 feet maximum). Try using a different cable that is known to be good, to rule-out cable issues.

  4. Run a self-check on the external device to ensure it is working properly. For printers, run the printer self-test as described in the printer's User Guide. If the printer self-test does not run correctly, the problem is in the printer. Refer to the printer service manual.

  5. Check if your ports are enabled, and properly configured in the BIOS Setup/Configuration Utility.

     Note: The selections listed in these steps may vary slightly, depending on the BIOS version installed on your system:

    1. Power on the system.
    2. Press F1 to enter the IBM Configuration/Setup Utility.
    3. Using the arrow keys, select Devices and I/O ports, then Enter.
    4. Using the arrow keys, select Serial Port Setup, then Enter.
    5. Ensure that the port is marked Enabled, and verify that you have the correct IRQ settings for the port.

      Note: Set a unique IRQ for each SCSI, RAID, or NIC installed in the system if possible, to prevent performance issues or hangs. Disable any unused devices to free up IRQ resources (e.g. serial ports, parallel port, onboard SCSI if not in use). The default setting is Enable for all the controllers. If you select Disable, the system will not configure the disabled device and the operating system will not see the device. (This is equivalent to unplugging the device.)

    6. Press Esc to return to the main menu.
    7. Using the arrow keys, select Parallel Port Setup, then Enter.
    8. Ensure the parallel port is set to Enabled.
      Note: Do not set it to PNP or Auto-Configure.
    9. Ensure the parallel port mode is set to Bi-Directional.
      Note: Do not set it to EPP, ECP or EPP & ECP.
    10. Press Esc to return to the main menu.
    11. Select Save Settings, then Exit the Setup Utility.


    Note: Software recognizes ports through their port assignments. Each port must have a unique port assignment. The System Configuration Utility program normally handles this, but you might have special hardware or software that requires you to change these assignments. Select the Devices and I/O Ports choice to view or change the assignments for devices and input/output ports. You can add serial ports by installing a serial adapter in an expansion slot. See the documentation that comes with the serial adapter for information about port assignments.

  6. Verify that the ports have no conflicts, and are seen correctly in Device Manager. A conflict exists if a yellow exclamation mark ("!") is listed next to the item. To open Windows Device Manager:

    1. Right-click My Computer.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. In the Properties window, select the Hardware tab.
    4. Click the Device Manager button.

  7. Run diagnostics on the port. A Serial or parallel port device failure may necessitate replacement of the system board, riser card, or I/O board, if the component is found defective by diagnostics. Install a wrap plug in the parallel port and run the diagnostic tests to determine which FRU failed. If the diagnostic tests (with the wrap plug installed) do not detect a failure, replace the cable. If that does not correct the problem, replace the system board, adapter connected to the cable, or the component indicated as failing in diagnostics. IBM Tri-Connector wrap plug (FRU 72X8546).

  8. Verify that the port is operational from a command prompt. To test a printer attached to the parallel port:

    1. From a DOS command prompt, type: Type dir >LPT1
    2. Verify the print job (directory listing) was sent to the printer
