Hangs at checkpoint 'ad' while rebooting with USB diskette drive

Symptom
While performing power cycling or a reboot test from a USB diskette drive, the system may hang at Checkpoint 'ad'. Checkpoint 'ad' can be seen on the LED display on the I/O board inside the chassis.

Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM eServers:
  • IBM eServer xSeries 366, Type 8863, any model  
  • IBM eServer xSeries MXE-460, Type 8874, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 460, Type 8872, any model
Solution
None

Workaround
Remove and re-install the USB diskette drive while hung at checkpoint 'ad', and the system may boot. If not, power the system off then on.

Additional Information
The checkpoint 'ad' hang occurs once in several hundred power cycles or reboots.
