Troubleshooting
Problem
I/O errors using remote CD-ROM with RSA II when running in Linux.
Resolving The Problem
Source |
---|
RETAIN tip: H181339
Symptom |
---|
During usage of the remote CD-ROM under Linux, an "Input/Output" error may be generated.
Affected configurations |
---|
The system is configured with the one or more of the following options:
- An IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter II, option part number 59P2984, replacement part number (FRU) 02R1654
- An IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA, option part number 13N0382, replacement part number (FRU) 73P9246
Notes:
- The IBM eServer xSeries 365 comes with an IBM RSA II as standard.
- The IBM eServer xSeries 445 comes with an IBM RSA as standard, but has an option to upgrade to an IBM RSA II-EXA.
The following operating systems are affected:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux, version 2.1
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux, version 3
- Red Hat Professional Workstation 9
- SUSE LINUX Professional 9.0
- SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8
Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software. Please see the IBM ServerProven compatibility page for more information.
Workaround |
---|
Follow either the Red Hat Linux, or SUSE LINUX instructions, below:

For remote transfers perform one of the following steps:
- Unmount, then remount the remote device in Linux. Try the copy process again.
-
Unmount, then remount the remote device through the RSA-II. Try the copy process again. To unmount the device, close any software applications that are using the device, and perform the following steps:
- From a console, type the command:
umount <mount point>
where <mount point> is the location where the device is mounted such as /mnt/cdrom
(e.g. unmount /mnt/cdrom)
- Click Unmount from the Remote Session

- From a console, type the command:
mount <mount point>
where <mount point> is the location where the device is to be mounted such as /mnt/cdrom.
(e.g. mount /mnt/cdrom)
- Note: Unloading the ibmusbasm driver will also provide more reliable behavior.
