ServeRAID error "drive(s) not responding or found in new location" at bootup - Servers

Troubleshooting

Problem

During POST, the user may see the following error message: Drive(s) not responding or found in new location.

Resolving The Problem

Source
RETAIN tip H181008

Symptom
During POST, the user may see the following error message:

Drive(s) not responding or found in new location

F2 Detailed Information
F4 Retry the Command
F5 Change the configuration and set the drive(s) to defunct
F10 Continue without changing the configuration

If the customer presses F2, the detailed information will show that the IDs on the SCSI backplane are now reversed in order, e.g. ID 0 is now ID 9.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM e(logo)servers:
  • an IBM eServer xSeries 240 (Type 8664), any model.
  • an IBM eServer xSeries 230 (Type 8658), any model.

The system may be any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:

  • a Netfinity 5600 server (Type 8664), any model.
  • a Netfinity 5100 server (Type 8658), any model.

The system is configured with any of the following option(s):

  • a ServeRAID-3H Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, option p/n 01K7207, FRU 01K7396.
  • a ServeRAID-3HB Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, option p/n 37L6086, FRU 01K7396 (adapter), FRU 09L2105 (cache).
    (ServeRAID-3H Battery Backup Cache, Option p/n 28L1003, FRU 09L2105)
  • a ServeRAID-3L Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, option p/n 01K7364, FRU 01K7352.
  • a ServeRAID-4H Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option p/n 37L6889, FRU 37L6892 (controller), FRU 37L6902 (cache daughter card), FRU 37L6903 (cache battery)
  • a ServeRAID-4L Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option p/n 37L6091, FRU 09N9540.
  • a ServeRAID-4M Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option p/n 37L6080, FRU 37L7258.
  • a ServeRAID-4M Ultra160 SCSI Controller (Japan), option p/n 19K0565, FRU 00N9543 (Japan).
  • a ServeRAID-4Lx Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option p/n 06P5740, FRU 06P5741.
  • a ServeRAID-4Mx Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option p/n 06P5736, FRU 06P5737.
Solution
  • Do not press F5 to update the RAID configuration.
  • Power down the server.
  • Remove the cover and the front bezel from the server.
  • Inspect the Power/Reset card (FRU 00N6377) and ensure that it is installed securely in the server chassis. If the Power/Reset card is loose, reseat it in the chassis. Proceed to step 6.
  • Remove the Power/Reset card.
    1. Above the power switch on the card, locate the two (2) small sensors (one white and one black).
    2. Wipe or blow any dust or debris off of these two (2) sensors and reinstall the Power/Reset card.
  • Replace the front bezel and cover.
  • Power on server and verify that the ServeRAID adapter is recognizing the SCSI hard drives at the correct SCSI IDs and that the ServeRAID adapter is no longer displaying any errors at POST.
  • If the ServeRAID adapter still displays an error at POST and you have verified that the Power/Reset card is seated correctly and free of dust and debris, call IBM-SERV to have the Power/Reset card replaced.
Additional information
The servers listed above employ an optical sensor in the Power/Reset card. The orientation of the sensor in the chassis determines how the SCSI IDs are ordered and scanned on the backplane. The Tower model scans from top to bottom and the rack model scans left to right. If the Power/Reset card comes loose from the chassis or dust and debris collect on the sensor, a change in the amount of light the sensor registers could cause it to reverse the ordering of the SCSI IDs.
