The USB diskette drive appears to be inoperative, you are unable to mount the USB diskette drive, or the updfstab command is not creating fstab entries

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H084514

Symptoms
  • The USB diskette drive appears to be inoperative
  • You are unable to mount the USB diskette drive
  • The updfstab command is not creating fstab entries

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer systems:

  • IBM eServer BladeCenter HS20, type 8678, any model
  • IBM eServer BladeCenter, type 8677, any model

The system may be any of the following IBM IntelliStation workstations:

  • IBM IntelliStation Z Pro, type 6221, any model

The system is configured with two processors.

The system is configured with the following option:

  • IBM USB portable diskette drive, option part number 05K9276, replacement part number (FRU) 05K9283

The following networking operating systems are affected:

  • Red Hat Advanced Server, version 2.1
  • Red Hat Linux, version 9.0
  • Red Hat Linux, version 8.0
  • Red Hat Linux, version 7.3

Solution
  1. Edit /etc/fstab file, to create an entry for the diskette drive. The diskette drive is listed as a SCSI device after all other SCSI devices.
Note: If you have a single SCSI hard disk drive it will be listed as (/dev/sda), the diskette drive will be listed next as(/dev/sdb).

  2. Add the following line text to create an entry for the diskette drive:

    /dev/sdb /mnt/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0

  3. Save your changes and exit.
  4. Type mkdir /mnt/floppy and press Enter to create a directory for the diskette drive.
  5. Type mount /mnt/floppy and press Enter to mount the diskette drive.
Additional information

During the detection of the USB device, the /etc/fstab file is not updated. Therefore the expected mount point for the diskette drive is not created.
