The server gets a 178 error when the Remote Supervisor Adapter is properly installed for IBM eServer xSeries 232, 342.

Symptom
The server gets a 178 error when the Remote Supervisor Adapter is properly installed.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eserver xSeries servers:

  • An xSeries 342, type 8669, any model
  • An xSeries 232, type 8668, any model

The system is configured with one or two processors.

The system is configured with the following option:

  • Remote Supervisor Adapter, Option part number 09N7585, replacement part number (FRU) 36L9912

The system's diagnostics pass.

The firmware level affected is 1.0

Solution
 Download and apply the "IBM eServer xSeries 232 and 342 Remote Supervisor Adapter Firmware Update Diskette, version 1.00", or later.
 
NOTE: All system codes should be flashed to the latest level.
 
 Additional information
The system will boot with the error "178 VPD Unavailable" when the Remote Supervisor Adapter is installed in slot one.
