This release note summarizes the changes made to the IBM HH LTO2 drive firmware from version 0376 to version 4100.

  1. Fix SCSI bus resets and/or hangs during bus discovery
  2. Redesign how SCSI commands are executed and finished to avoid use of time delays in Microcode.
  3. Drive does not report error on WRITE command when an illegal DENSITY CODE is selected.
  4. Drive enters Fatal Trap during SCSI Write operation.
  5. Reading past one block size into another cause fatal error.
  6. Hard read error if intermittent malfunction in headservo system.
  7. Seek error on overwrite if reread required of first read dataset during
    overwrite operation.
  8. Drive may report overlapped command on the next command after a REWIND Immediate command.
  9. Erasures/rereads may occur in low speed on datasets that were written with dropouts.
  10. Read/Write selftest fails when executed in Read Only mode after reset.
  11. Sometimes selftest for WRITE Asic fails during power up.
  12. Drive is not giving check condition on SCSI MODE SELECT with truncated header.
  13. Command timeout on DACI command "Move to track" when no cartridge inserted in drive.
  14. Overtemperature condition after flashing of new code.
  15. A LOG SENSE command was issued while loading a cleaning cartridge with an immediate LOAD command. The LOG SENSE command timed out because the command was not executed before the cleaning was completed.
  16. Locate operation may take longer than expected.
  17. VERIFY command did not update logical block counters correctly if command ended with an error.
  18. Unable to eject the cartridge.
  19. Data Miscompare in a READ BUFFER after a WRITE BUFFER command.
  20. A certain sequence of READ, REWIND and READ scsi commands, with CRC error in command frame, causes a hang situation.
  21. Drive will sometimes hang on rewind after load.
  22. Host may respond with BUSY message on the next SCSI command after a command giving SCSI CRC or Parity error on data transfer.
  23. Drive may be reset during write after rapidly repeated dropouts.
  24. Drive may miss one Datablock or Filemark when spesial testcases using many different sized Blocks are read.
  25. If cartridge was written by a different drive vendor, some special data patterns may be incorrectly read from the tape.
  26. Hard read error if poor readsignal quality across overwrite- or dropout position on the tape.
  27. Drive may hang during READ.
  28. Drive may sometimes run a little slower than expected during read.
  29. Fatal trap caused by too many entries in internal debug log.
  30. Cartridge will not be ejected after pushing eject button during ongoing SCSI WRITE. Drive will need a power off/power on to recover.
  31. The drive doesn’t report tape alert flags when they loaded different defective cartridges.
  32. Drive returns too short record or resets itself when reading a tape written on an other venors drive.
  33. Incorrect data was delivered to host.
  34. Drive reports Cartridge fault.
  35. Seek error could be reported when reading IBM generated tape across track turn.
  36. Drive do not respond to selection on SCSI if there is a delay of more than
    the configured Flush Timeout between SCSI WRITE commands.
  37. Drive reports Media error.
  38. Drive reads data that should have been overwritten in a prior overwrite operation at track turn.
  39. Drive may report unexpected illegal length on tapes written by other vendor.
  40. Hard read on tape with severe servo dropouts.
  41. The drive will be reset after an unload command is issued and the cartridge
    memory update failed.
  42. Drive will be reset or enter fatal error if maximum operating temperature is
    exceeded at the same time as a WRITE 1 Filemark command is given.
  43. Drive may hang during read recovery attempt.

Version 410

Changes made to the IBM HH LTO2 drive firmware from version 376 to version 410.

  • Implement LED self test.
  • Enhancement to reduce Checksum Failures.
  • Fix Fatal error due to deadlock between firmware (main microprocessor) and SCSI microcontroller.
  • Fix issue where VERIFY command corrupts counters in certain sequences.
  • Change to not clear diagnostic data after doing SCSI memory dump.
  • LOCATE on parallel SCSI in parallel with other SCSI command, may give fatal error.
  • Allow Write Buffer outside Beginning Of Tape marker.
  • Increase to 15 ms. delay procedure. This is done to make sure that the main-processor should not be overloaded by handling requests from the SCSI-controller in case of heavy SCSI-bus activity.
  • Ensure that used Worm cartridges will always be detected as not uninitialized.
  • Hard read error/fatal trap after reread on LTO2 tape.
  • Drive will sometimes reset itself for the following sequence: Write some data and locate back towards the start of the recording. Let the drive enter overrun and issue a rewind command. If the drive happens to restart the tape before the rewind is started there is a timing window that will cause the problem.
  • When tape is up to speed a new write of the Media Header is started too early.
  • Drive returns Seek Error after severe servo problems.
  • Fatal trap if a reset occurs while unbuckling an expired cleaning cartridge.
  • Tape thread counter is incremented at reset/power up even if tape is already threaded.
  • Load/unload margin test will fail if test is started after a reset with tape threaded.
  • Issuing a SCSI READ or WRITE command right after power-up may give unexpected/wrong behavior.
  • Unexpected reset may occur if first read is from beginning of an odd track no.
  • A tape access operation may take a long time.
  • Drive may fatal trap or reset itself if there is a long dropout at end of partition during write.
  • Drive set up with Fatal Trap may trap on rewind after Hard Write Error.
  • Drive traps if head is position almost at calibration point and drive is reset with tape threaded.
  • Cartridge will be ejected if drive is reset while threading the tape.
  • Overwrite function may sometimes fail or fatal trap.
  • Handle illegal messages/bus phases more gracefully.
  • Internal parity error recovery during write causes reset.
  • Hard read error on Space/Locate commands if reread required on first dataset read.
  • Various "Data Bytes Read" log parameters jump by 2^32 on "space filemark" command.
  • Hard read error when servo dropouts.
  • Drive hangs when ECC-system detects certain types of corrupted data.
  • SCSI-hang on Write command when hard write error.
  • Hang if abort message issued during reselection.
  • Recovery regarding unload/eject problems caused by noisy tach system.
  • Locate to beginning of a track with odd track no. may fail due to tape thickness.
  • Hard read error on tape with overwrite with dropout on last dataset at end of track.
