This release note summarizes the firmware changes made to the IBM SDLT320 tape drive firmware from version V70 to V86.
- After a Hardware Error, a subsequent Rewind command causes a drive error.
- If six Mode Selects are sent to the drive without delay between commands during a cleaning cycle, the SCSI bus goes bus free and causes a drive error.
- Writing small blocks of data (less than 32 bytes) and toggling compression on and off between blocks may cause incorrect data to be returned on a subsequent read command.
- An odd byte, tape read on a wide SCSI bus would transfer all but the last byte of data and hang.
- The drive will report ready after recovering from an internal error, but it is not calibrated and will error on subsequent write or read commands.
- After spacing or locating to a position and getting a hard read error on the first logical block, the SCSI goes bus free and a drive error occurs.
- Optimized the ECC error correction processing speed. Reading tapes with high errors rates can have up to a 7 times improvement in throughput.
- The cleaning LED will now extinguish if there is a successful calibration on a tape. This makes the SDLT drive operation consistent with the DLT 8000 drive.
- A Read command after an Erase from Beginning Of Tape (BOT) returns data instead of blank tape condition if the Erase command is issued after the read ahead has loaded data into the cache.
- After a Hardware Error during a Locate command, a subsequent Space Backward command will fail.
- For pre-V55 firmware, a long delay may occur on a cartridge unload.
- Implemented the level 1 diagnostic. This diagnostic has 4 parts: Checks Read Only Memory, Operating System queuing, cache interface, and servo status.
- After a dropped leader occurs, if the drive is reset it hangs at the end of Power On Selftest.
- Cleaning bits in Log Sense will signify cleaning required, but cleaning LED does not illuminate.
- Space Backward multiple sequential filemarks can take very long with particular data and filemark pattern and could timeout in certain system environments.
- Remaining capacity reported at BOT is different in V70 vs. V55. This causes some capacity calculation issues in some backup software applications.
- If drive encounters a bus reset during servo calibration on power up it will result in drive error.
- Drive is not reporting proper Check Condition on a Space Backward when encountering a filemark which creates an incorrect calculation in the test application of the expected location on tape.
- Read hang on large block sizes (>2.5MB) in uncompressed mode after Space Backward.
- Fix long Diagnostic level 2 test with a blank tape (now takes 3 hours).
- Log Page 3C bytes 75-77 is reporting hours since last clean and host is expecting minutes since last clean.
- Add capability to allow ejection of an expired cleaning tape.
- While the tape is still moving from a Rewind Immediate command, a Read Position command will report the position from before the Rewind instead of reporting 0.
- Possible timeouts during “append anywhere” operation if host software is expecting to utilize the (Invalidate Tape Directory) bit in the Load Unload command.
- Intermittent calibration error Sense Key 3 ASC 52 with DLT4000, DLT7000, and DLT8000 cartridges.
- A drive error could occur if more than five Read commands are issued in rapid succession after the drive had already reported that it was at End of Data.
- An Inquiry command issued while disconnected on a Read command may cause the drive not to reconnect for the Read command.
- Hard read errors in DLT7000 and DLT8000 format tapes.
- Fix several issues related to cartridge stuck in the drive.
- Some drives make an audible noise from the head lift mechanism for several seconds following power on.
- Drive could drop the leader when unbuckling.
