Determining whether to use a marketing part number or a field replacement unit (FRU) part number when ordering parts

Resolving The Problem

When ordering parts, please have the 7-digit part number available at the time the order is being placed.

  • Marketing part numbers are used to purchase a product as an additional accessory or upgrade for your computer.
  • Field replacement unit (FRU) part numbers are service part numbers used to replace a defective part currently installed or attached to your computer.

Marketing part number

The marketing part number is 7-digits in length, and it is mainly used when you want to add accessories to your computer. When you place an order using a marketing part number, the package will come with all the materials you need to completely install the new addition to your computer.

If you find that there is not a marketing part number available for the product you desire, then it is only available as a field replacement unit (FRU). Usually this is the case when the product you desire was originally packaged in your personal computer, and it was only intended to be offered as a replacement. Visit a Service Provider when you have made an informed decision on the accessory you desire for your personal computer.

Field replacement unit (FRU) part number

The field replacement unit part number is 7-digits in length, and it is mainly used when you need to replace a defective part currently installed in your personal computer. When you place an order using a FRU part number, the package will come with the replacement part only; no other materials will come with the package.

If you find that there is not a FRU part number available for the product you desire, then it is only available as a marketing part number. Usually this is the case when the product you desire was only intended to be offered as part of a sales promotion. Visit a Service Provider or call Boulder Parts Center at 800-388-7080 when you are ready to have your current defective accessory part replaced.

Multiple FRU numbers (MultiFRU)

If you see the denotation of "MultiFRU", this means the part has different FRU part numbers depending on the country in which you are located, or where the product was purchased.

Example 1: Using a marketing part number to purchase products

You purchased a personal computer in the United States and you decide you want an extra 512MB memory simm for your personal computer. Using the marketing part number provided from the description above, and assuming that the memory simm is applicable to the country you reside in, you may visit the IBM Web site, or contact your local Service Provider, to find out pricing and availability of the part.

Once the order is placed, you will receive in the mail not only the part, but all documentation about how to install the part and all applicable warranty information. Your documentation along with your proof of purchase validates that you have purchased the part, and if for any reason you need to have that part replaced, your documentation will allow you to facilitate that transaction with IBM or your local Service Provider.

Example 2: Using a field replacement unit (FRU) part number to replace a defective part if it was purchased or bundled with your personal computer

You purchased a personal computer in the United States and a Service Provider or a service technician (through 1-800-IBM SERV) determines that your 512MB memory simm needs to be replaced. Using the FRU part number provided from the description above, and assuming that the memory simm is applicable to the country you reside in and is still under warranty, you can inquire about the availability of a replacement part and learn how to return the defective part.

Your proof of purchase will allow you and IBM to determine if your part is under warranty. If your specific part is not under warranty, then your local Service Provider will discuss pricing options, or other solutions that will help you make an informed decision. Once the order is placed, you will receive the replacement part only in the mail, without any documentation about how to install the part, and without any applicable warranty information.
