Resolving The Problem

Configuring the tape drive as a device under SCO

  1. Use # mkdev tape to remove any existing tape drives.
  2. Re-add the tape drive with the command # mkdev tape.
  3. Select 1.Configure a SCSI or Enhanced IDE.
  4. Select 1. Install a SCSI Tape.
  5. Press enter for default 'alad or ips' ( use blad for adaptec lvd).
  6. Select Host adapter (default 0).
  7. Select SCSI BUS (default 0, ips - see note below).
  8. TheTarget ID is same as shown in Ctrl A device SCSI id.
  9. Select Lun = 0.
  10. Update (verify table, press y, press enter).
  11. Select Vendor ID (press enter for default).
  12. Select SCSI Version (press the number 2 and press enter) (SCSI-2 device).
  13. Select Response Data Format (press enter for default).
  14. Select Tape Drive Type ( 1. genericSCSI-1/... ) tr4 or 20/40 8mm ( 4. DAT compressing or noncompressing ) all DDS or DLT.
  15. Enter new string ( press q ).
  16. Select SCSI ... ... Tape Drive Configuration program.
  17. Press 6 for View current SCSI.
  18. Press q.
  19. Press q.
  20. Press y (yes to both questions to create new kernel).
  21. The system should reboot.
  22. Type /etc/shutdown -i0 to reboot.

Testing your configuration with tar
  • test -- # tar tvf /dev/rStp0
  • backup -- #tar cvf /dev/rStp0 <file or directory required>
i .e. # tar cvf /dev/rStp0 /testdir/*
  • restore -- #tar xvf /dev/rStp0

If tar tvf returns an error, try erasing the tape (# tape erase). This may take some time depending on the size of your tape.

Before you begin the installation, review the following information:
  • You must install logicaldrives asBus Number 0 when using the MKDEV program, regardless of the channel that the physical drives are on.
  • You must install non disk devices, such asCD-ROM and tape drives, as Bus Numbers1, 2, or 3 relative to the channel to which they are attached. External Channel 1 connector is Bus Number 1, external Channel2 connector is Bus Number 2, and internal Channel 3 connectoris Bus Number 3.
