Limitations
All tape products sold by IBM are put through a demanding test and qualification process to make sure they meet the stringent quality levels demanded by our customers. However, it is difficult to test all possible combinations of operating systems, backup/restore application software, SCSI host adaptors, data cartridge brands, and all of the other variables that are sometimes used by our customers. To help eliminate these problems, IBM recommends the following:
  • Use only IBM-brand data cartridges, or the data cartridges shipped with the IBM Tape options. These are the brands thoroughly tested by IBM.
  • Clean tape drives on a regular basis, using IBM-brand cleaning cartridges, or the cleaning cartridge brand shipped with the tape option. Follow the cleaning procedures, and frequency, as described in the user manual.
  • Handle all data and cleaning cartridges with care. Cartridges dropped on the floor should be promptly replaced.
  • Cleaning cartridges are marked with the maximum number of times they can used. Data cartridges should be replaced at least once per year, or sooner, depending on usage.
Other
Installation time is approximately one hour.
