General Information

The Magstar MP Tape Subsystem is available as rack-mountable library Models B21, B22, C21, and C22. Models B21 and C21 have a single tape drive and Models B22 and C22 have two tape drives. Each tape drive in a Magstar MP subsystem contains a mechanical assembly for moving the tape, electronic circuitry for reading and writing, and microprocessors that control tape functions.

The unit attaches to a host processor through a differential SCSI-2 channel adapter (Adaptec 2944). The integrated control unit contains the electronics and microcode for reading and writing data. The control unit functions include management of the data buffer, error recovery procedures, and the control of all tape drive operations and some channel operations.

Each model contains two removable 10-cartridge magazines and uses a cartridge loading and transport mechanism to move the tapes to and from the storage magazines and the tape drive. With two magazines of cartridges, the Magstar MP can provide up to 300GB of on-line data capacity with a data transfer rate of up to 54GB per hour at maximum compression.

Magstar 3570-B series models are same as 3570-C series with two exceptions:

  1. 3570-C models come with a bar code reader that reduces the time to change tape cartridges in the library (this is not an option for the B model).
  2. 3570-C models come with 8 elements increasing access times by 3 rather than 4 elements that are used in the 3570-B models.

The IBM Magstar (R) MP (Multi-Purpose) 3570 Tape Library provides a tape storage solution supported on the Netfinity 5000, 5500 and 7000 model servers and the PC Servers 325 and 330. Features include:
  • 7 MB/second sustained data rates using C-format cartridges (2.2 MB/second with Model Bxx)
  • Barcode reader included on Cxx models
  • Expanded 5MB cache memory on Cxx models for faster read/write performance
  • Self-enclosed data cartridges with pre-imbedded servo tracks
  • Mid-point load for fast time to data
  • Up to 300 GB of near online data with cartridge capacities of 15 GB (using 3:1 compression)
Warranty
3 year limited IBM On-site Repair

Hardware Requirements for IBM systems
The IBM Magstar MP 3570 Tape Library Models B21, B22, C21, and C22 are designed only for installation in the IBM Netfinity Rack (9306900*) (footnote [5]) or NetBAY22 (9306200) rack. They can be attached to IBM Netfinity 4500R, IBM eserver xSeries 340 (8656), 5000, 5500 or 7000 and IBM PC Server 325 or 330 systems that support attachment with an included adapter card. A 4.5 meter SCSI cable is also included. The Magstar MP 3570 has two configurations:

  • Base-single host library configuration is intended for attaching the Magstar MP 3570 to a single host, where the library is accessible to the host through one SCSI port. All models can operate in this configuration. With the two drive Models B22 and C22, the two tape drives are normally daisy-chained on the same SCSI bus with an included 0.5 meter SCSI cable. To obtain optimum performance when using C-Format cartridges in the Model C22, separate SCSI busses may be required depending on the host system performance. The 3570 Adapter Card Kit (part number 08L6517) should be ordered to provide this additional SCSI bus connection.
  • Split-dual host library configuration is intended for attaching the IBM Magstar MP 3570 Tape Library to two hosts, where it appears as two separate half-size libraries on two SCSI buses. The Magstar MP 3570 Models B22 or C22 should be ordered for this configuration (or the second drive in the Models B21 or C21). A second adapter card, 4.5 meter SCSI cable, and terminator are also required for this configuration, which can be obtained by ordering the 3570 Adapter Card Kit (part number 08L6517).

Supported Operating Systems
  • Windows NT 4.0
Compatibility
All of the Magstar MP units use the Magstar MP Fast Access Linear Tape cartridges with longitudinal serpentine recording. The new cartridge style provides two tape spools with mid-point load for fast access to the metal particle media. Each cartridge has an uncompressed data capacity of approximately 5GB (1 gigabyte equals 1,000,000,000 bytes) and a compressed capacity of 15GB with 3:1 compression. There are two versions of the cartridges, the original B-Format and the newer, C-Format.

Please check http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for compatibility information.
