What's new for IBM i 7.1
Read about new or changed information for the IBM® i integration with BladeCenter and System x topic collection.

Changes to iSCSI-attached integrated servers
- iSCSI software targets
IBM i now supports iSCSI software targets using standard Ethernet Network Interface Cards (NICs). Software targets provide additional flexibility for the IBM i iSCSI target solution. See Attaching servers to IBM i using iSCSI for more information.
- Service Processor Manager
The Service Processor Manager function of IBM i Integrated Server Support is now used for integrated server management connections and power control. IBM Director (5722-DR1) is no longer used for this purpose. See Initiator system and service processor connection for more information.
Attention: If you have a service processor configuration that does not use an IP address or host name for the service processor connection, you must change it to use an IP address or host name. See Converting pre-IBM i 7.1 service processor configurations to use an IP address or host name for instructions.- VMware ESX server changes
Additional versions of VMware ESX Server are now supported on iSCSI-attached integrated servers. See the IBM i iSCSI Solution Guide
for more information.
New network server description (NWSD) types are provided for VMware ESX servers. The new types eliminate the requirement for an "install" drive (the second drive) on ESX servers. For VMware ESXi embedded servers, the "system" drive (the first drive) is no longer required as well. See Predefined virtual storage and naming for integrated VMware ESX servers for more information.
Attention: VMware ESX servers that were installed on prior IBM i releases must be migrated to the new NWSD type after installing IBM i 7.1. See the IBM i iSCSI Solution Guidefor instructions.
With VMware ESX Server, IBM i Integrated Server Support administration functions, such as shutdown, do not run directly on the VMware ESX server. Instead, the VMware ESX Integrated Server Support functions run on a separate integrated Windows server. The integrated Windows server serves as a management server for the VMware ESX server. See IBM i management infrastructure for integrated VMware ESX servers for more information.
- New Web GUI tasks
New GUI tasks are available in the IBM Navigator for i Web GUI:
Creates an iSCSI-attached integrated server. See the IBM i iSCSI Solution Guide
for more information.
Deletes an integrated server. See Uninstalling integrated servers for more information.
Launches the service processor Web console for an iSCSI-attached BladeCenter blade or System x server. For example, it can launch the Advanced Management Module Web interface for a BladeCenter. See the following articles for more information:
Launching the Web console for an integrated server
Launching the Web console for a service processor
Launching the Web console for a remote system
- IBM Navigator for i Web GUI
The IBM Navigator for i Web GUI is now the preferred user interface for managing integrated servers. Therefore, most integrated server management tasks are documented using the Web GUI. See IBM Navigator for i.
Note: The System i® Navigator GUI is still available in IBM i 7.1 and works adequately for many tasks. However, the new GUI tasks listed earlier and support for some IBM i 7.1 enhancements are not available in the System i Navigator GUI.- New IBM i CL commands
New IBM i control language (CL) commands are available for integrated servers:
Installs an iSCSI-attached integrated Windows Server 2008 or VMware ESX server. See the IBM i iSCSI Solution Guide
for more information.
Deletes an integrated server. See Uninstalling integrated servers for more information.
- Install Linux Server (INSLNXSVR) CL command
The Install Linux Server (INSLNXSVR) CL command is no longer supported. The INSLNXSVR command was used for Linux and VMware ESX server installs on prior IBM i releases.
Alternatives: No alternatives are available for Linux server installs. For VMware ESX server installs, use the Create Server Web GUI task or the INSINTSVR command. See the IBM i iSCSI Solution Guide
for more information.
- No new integrated Linux servers
New integrated Linux servers cannot be installed on IBM i 7.1. Integrated Linux servers that were installed on prior IBM i releases and then migrated forward to IBM i 7.1 can continue to run as is, but without service support. The suggested migration path for these servers is to install an integrated VMware ESX server and run the Linux server as a virtual machine under VMware ESX.
- Fewer IBM i licensed programs required
IBM i licensed programs no longer needed for integrated server functions:
- IBM Extended Integrated Server Support for i5/OS (5761-LSV)
- IBM Director (5722-DR1)
- Qshell (5770-SS1 option 30)
See the IBM i iSCSI Solution Guide
for more information.
