Installing the KVM and TSSC network components for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3

After you install the ProtecTIER® servers, you must install the TSSC, KVM components, and TSSC Ethernet switch.
Attention: If the customer does not have a preexisting TSSC, but purchased a TSSC with the gateway, you are required to install it and its related components, along with the other gateway hardware. Not installing, connecting, and configuring the TSSC (either purchased or preexisting) in accordance with this installation roadmap causes the ProtecTIER server configuration procedure later in this document to fail.

Before you begin

Step 2 in the following procedure directs you to use the Gateway Installation Instructions for IBM Rackmount TSSC/USB Modem/Ethernet Switch/KVM, PN 35P1220, installation instruction to install the TSSC, TSSC Ethernet switch, TSSC USB modem, and KVM assembly. Consider installing the KVM assembly and TSSC Ethernet switch below the TSSC in the rack, as documented in the following procedure.

Procedure

  1. Install the 8-port KVM switch. See Figure 1.
    1. Install the L-brackets  1  onto the KVM switch  2 , using the four slotted pan head screws  3  provided. Mount the brackets as far forward on the switch as possible.
    2. Remove the three screws  4  that are in the lower position on the rails at EIA Unit 19, holes 2 and 3.
    3. Slide the switch onto the rails.
    4. Secure the KVM switch to the rack with the three screws that you removed in step 1.b.
Figure 1. Installing the KVM switch

  2. See the IBM Rackmount TSSC/USB Modem/Ethernet Switch/KVM, PN 35P1220, provided with the TSSC server, for the most current installation instructions for the TSSC server and server rails, TSSC USB modem, TSSC Ethernet switch, and the KVM assembly. The optimal location for installing the TSSC is in EIA Unit 18. Use EIA holes 52, 53, and 54 for the installation of the rail assembly for the TSSC. Make sure that the rail pins extend through holes 52 and 53 at the front and rear of the frame.
  3. Mount the KVM assembly and TSSC Ethernet switch directly under the TSSC in EIA Unit 17. Use EIA holes 49, 50, and 51 for the installation of the KVM rail assembly. Place the mounting clips in holes 49 and 51 (EIA Unit 17) in the front and rear of the frame. Use the rail assembly mount position at the rear of the frame to secure the TSSC Ethernet switch when added after the KVM assembly is installed.

Installing the ProtecTIER server cable management arm assembly

Before you begin

If the rack is in its final location, installing the ProtecTIER server cable management arm is not strictly necessary. Some customers might not want it installed for ease of access to the rack interior. Verify the customer’s preferences before you start this procedure. If the customer does not want to the cable management arm assembly installed, skip this procedure and go to one of the following sections, depending upon the installation type: If you do install the cable management arm assembly, review the following required items:

About this task

The cable-management arm can be installed on either side of the server. This document shows it being installed on the left side. To install the cable-management arm on the right side, follow the instructions and install the hardware on the opposite side.

Procedure

  1. Install the cable management support arm. See Figure 3.
    1. Connect one end of the support arm  1  to the same slide rail to which you plan to attach the cable-management arm.
    2. Swing the other end of the support arm  2  toward the rack. Make sure the shiny bar is on top, as shown.

  2. Install the cable management arm stop bracket. See Figure 4.
    1. Install the L-shaped cable-management stop bracket  1  on the unattached end of the support arm.
    2. Turn the bracket  2  to secure it to the support arm.

  3. Connect the stop bracket to the slide rail. See Figure 5.
    1. Attach the other side of the support arm to the rear of the slide rail.
    2. Pull out the pin  1 .
    3. Slide the bracket  2  into the slide rail.

  4. Install the cable management arm-mounting bracket. See Figure 6.
    1. Pull out the mounting bracket pin  1 .
    2. Slide the mounting bracket  2  into the slide rail onto which you are installing the cable management arm.
    3. Push the bracket into the slide rail until the spring-loaded pin snaps into place.

  5. Install the cable management arm. See Figure 7.
    1. Place the cable management arm on the support arm.
    2. Pull out the cable management arm pin  1 .
    3. Slide the cable management arm tab  2  into the slot on the inside of the slide rail.
    4. Push the tab until it snaps into place.

  7. If necessary, or if the customer prefers, install the front M6 screws. See Figure 9.
    1. Slide the server into the rack until it snaps into place.
    2. Insert and tighten the M6 screws  2  in the front of the server.
    3. To slide the server out of the rack, press the release latches  1 .

Note: The front M6 screws are inserted when the rack cabinet is moved or is installed in a vibration-prone area. If the rack is to be moved, you must also secure the cable management arm first. See Figure 10. Use a cable tie to secure the free end of the cable management arm to the cable management support arm. When the rack is in its final location, remove the cable tie from the cable management arm.
