IBM Netezza Replication Services, Version 1.6

Physical component preparation

You can implement the log server hosts as physical hardware or virtual machines. Use this topic if you want to implement the log server hosts as physical hardware. If you want to implement the log server hosts as virtual machines, skip this topic and proceed to Operating system installation. Prerequisites for replication helps to guide a decision as to whether to implement the log server hosts as physical hardware or virtual machines.

Work with your hardware IT supplier to provision the x64 hosts that you selected based on the identified prerequisites. The following diagram illustrates the cabling connection for a log server that is implemented as a cluster of two hosts (IBM® x3650 M4) with full network and storage fault tolerance, using bonded network connections, a private switch, and a dual controller DS3524 storage array.

Figure 1. Cabling sample
The diagram shows two IBM x3650 M3 Netezza hosts that each have two connections to a switch. The switch has two connections to one X3650 M4 replication log server host and two connections to another X3650 M4 replication log server host. Each replication log server host has two connections to a DS3524 array. There is a 1 GbE dedicated IMM port per replication log server host and bonded 1 GbE replication log server-to-WAN connections. Each replication log server has an optional 1 GbE replication house connection for remote access.

When you install the log server host operating system, the operating system detects the various hardware components and installs the appropriate device drivers. Depending on the hardware supplier, you might need to install additional device drivers; consult your provider for their requirements. Also, additional steps might be required to configure the components. For example, the guides for IBM System x hardware contain steps for obtaining and upgrading firmware versions, configuring network addresses, and so forth. Before you proceed with the operating system installation, the hardware supplier should identify and complete the relevant steps as part of racking the hardware.
