IBM Maximo Spatial Asset Management, Version 7.6

Service layers

You can separate maps into several distinct themes, such as roads, water and sewage services, and electrical services. Each theme can be represented visually on the map by one or more service layers.

In IBM® Maximo® Spatial Asset Management, a map is a collection of map services, and each map service contains a set of layers. You can add one or more service layers that can be linked with IBM Maximo Asset Management records to each map service that you add to a map. The map service determines which layers are available for you to select.

If you do not add any layers in the service layers list then all layers are visible and no layers can be linked to records.

For each service layer that you select, you assign a GIS object that you create in the Map Manager application. These objects reference feature layers. A feature layer represents GIS data for features that can appear on a map, for example, a steel distribution pole. The feature layer can be represented visually on the map with a feature type of point, line, or polygon. You associate layers with GIS objects to identify what the corresponding feature layer is, and so that multiple geographic databases can be supported. If there is more than one layer in the map that maps to the same GIS object, then all layers must be added to the Service Layers table.

Each service layer can be arranged in a hierarchy in the GIS. For example, the first level in an electrical service layer might be called ELECTRIC, and have the following layers:
  • Capacitor banks
  • Primary meters
  • Secondary meters
  • Street lights
  • Substation sites
There might also be a child of ELECTRIC called POLES, which could have the following service layers:
  • Wood distribution poles
  • Steel distribution poles
  • Concrete distribution poles

By adding service layers to map services, you build a library of available feature classes for spatial-enabled applications, such as Assets, Locations, Service Address, Service Requests, and Work Order Tracking.
