Sketching simple diagrams

Sketches are simple, independent diagrams that can illustrate any technology-related or business-related interaction at a high level of abstraction. Sketches are available in version 4.0 and later.

Ensure that a project area exists and is associated with the Documentation System Domain.

About this task

A sketch is a very simple type of diagram. The elements in a sketch include shapes such as rectangles, circles, cylinders, stick figures that represent people, and text labels. Unlike other types of UML diagrams, sketches have only a few types of elements and only one type of relationship between elements. Also, sketches do not contain multiple diagrams; each sketch is an independent diagram. The following figure is an example of a sketch.

You can connect elements in a sketch with links. Unlike other models, sketches contain only one type of link in a sketch, which can represent any type of relationship between the elements.

Elements in a sketch can also contain other elements. Containment can represent any kind of grouping or relationship between the elements. The following figure shows a sketch with elements in a container.

Procedure

  1. On the Designs menu, click Create Design Resource > Sketch.
  2. In the Title field, enter a name for the sketch.
  3. Click Save.

What to do next

On the Sketcher Diagram tab, you can add elements to the sketch and link the elements.
