Remove the model 285 or 520 service processor assembly

Use this procedure to remove the service processor assembly.

If you are removing the service processor assembly from a model 520 or IntelliStation® POWER® 285 to replace another part, go to Remove and replace the model 285 or 520 service processor assembly to access another part.

Step 1. Record the current service processor assembly settings

When you remove the service processor assembly, service processor settings are lost. If you have custom settings, do the following before removing the service processor assembly so that the settings can be restored.
Note: If the service processor assembly is not functional, you will be unable to record the settings. Continue with Step 2. Remove the service processor assembly or time-of-day battery.
  1. Check and record the server firmware level prior to replacing this part. To use the ASMI, view and record the existing level of server firmware in the upper-right corner below the copyright statement, for example, SF230_156. Depending on your situation, you might need to update the system to the latest server firmware code level after you replace the service processor.
Note: If you prefer to use the HMC or operating system commands to view and record the current server firmware level, see Viewing existing firmware levels.
  2. If your system is managed by an HMC, backup the logical partition profile data. Perform the following steps:
    1. Ensure that the managed system is in the Standby or Operating state. The state is displayed in the Contents area of the HMC window, in the column labeled State.
Note: If the state is not in Standby or Operating, refer to Correcting the managed system operating state.
    2. Click on Server and Partition.
    3. Server Management.
    4. Right-click on the managed system containing the service processor.
    5. From the menu, select Profile Data > Backup.
    6. Enter a profile name.
    7. OK.
  3. Access the ASMI to record service processor settings you previously set. You can access the ASMI through an HMC or a PC.
    Notes:
  4. Record the IP address type and information.
    1. On the ASMI Welcome pane, select Network Services.
    2. Select Network Configuration.
    3. Record whether the type of IP address field shows Static or Dynamic.
    4. Choose from the following options:
      • If Static is listed, you will need to record the configuration settings. Continue with step 4.e.
      • If Dynamic is listed, you do not need to record the IP addressing information. Continue with 5.
Note: When dynamic addressing is used, the new service processor assembly will be assigned a new IP address.
      • If a combination of Static and Dynamic addressing is listed, record all static configuration information. Continue with step 4.e.
    5. If static is listed, record the following applicable settings for network interface eth0.
Table 1. IP address information for eth0
      Field Value
      IP address
      Subnet mask
    6. Record the following applicable settings for network interface eth1.
Table 2. IP address information for eth1
      Field Value
      IP address
      Subnet mask
  5. Record the following information that appears in the ASMI:
    • Power/Restart Control
    • System Service Aids including Call-Home/Call-In setup
    • System Information
    • System Configurations, including System Name
    • Performance Setup
    • Login Profile
  6. Record any service processor settings you may have set using operating system commands.
    • If you are running AIX® or Linux®, record the current bootlist order which can be found in the SMS menus.
    • If you are running i5/OS®, record any service processor settings you may have set using i5/OS commands.

Step 2. Remove the service processor assembly or time-of-day battery

  1. Choose from the following options:
    • If your system is managed by an HMC, continue with step 2.
    • If your system is not managed by an HMC, continue with step 5.
  2. If you have an HMC, choose from the following options:
    • If you use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) IP addressing, continue with step 3.
    • If you use static IP addressing, continue with step 4.
  3. Clear the current DHCP address by performing the following steps:
    1. From the HMC, right-click the managed system and select Reset or Remove Connection.
    2. Select Remove Connection and click OK. This will remove the managed system object and its associated IP address assignment.
Note: This will prevent the service processor which was replaced from reconnecting to the HMC in the event that the card is reinstalled later. If reinstallation of the card is necessary, the command mksysconn -o auto must be run to allow the original IP address to be polled by the HMC.
    3. Continue with step 4.
  4. Use the Service Focal Point application in the HMC to remove the service processor assembly. If you have a redundant service processor, you must use Service Focal Point to remove the service processor assembly. For details, see Exchange the service processor assembly using an HMC.
  5. To manually remove the service processor assembly, first perform prerequisite tasks as described in Before you begin and then return to this procedure and continue with the next step.
  6. Stop the system or logical partition.
  7. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system.
Note: This system might be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that all power sources to the system have been completely disconnected.
  8. If you have a rack-mounted model 285 or 520, Remove the front cover from the rack-mounted model 285, 52x, 55x, or OpenPower 720 and the 0595 expansion unit.
  9. If you have a rack-mounted model 285 or 520, Place the rack-mounted system or expansion unit in the service position.
  10. Remove the service access cover, see Remove the service access cover from the model 285, 51x, 52x, 55x, 710, or OpenPower 720.
  11. Locate the service processor assembly C as shown in the following figures.

  12. Label and disconnect all cables connected to the service processor assembly.
  13. Squeeze the tabs A on the end of each service processor assembly handle, and rotate the service processor handles to the open position B. Then pull the service processor assembly C out of the system. Video of removing the service processor and the time-of-day battery.Video of removing the service processor and the time-of-day battery.
  14. If the time-of-day battery is the failing part, Remove and replace the model 285 or 520 time-of-day battery.
  15. Continue with replacing the part. See Replace the model 285 or 520 service processor assembly.
