Migration considerations

Find guidance for tasks you need to check before you upgrade from PCI-X and PCIe SAS Raid storage adapters to PCIe2 or PCIe3 SAS Raid storage adapters

Before you install the PCIe2 or PCIe3 SAS Raid storage adapter, ensure that you have a current data backup. Before you upgrade the adapters, ensure there are no existing adapter or array related errors.

The PCIe2 or PCIe3 SAS Raid storage adapter verifies the arrays are able to be converted and if not, will log errors. Once these error have been corrected, the adapter starts the conversion automatically. Each data block in the attached disk drives (HDD/SSD) will be converted to the T10 data integrity field (DIF) format. The RAID sets remains unprotected during this conversion.

When upgrading from PCI-X and PCIe SAS Raid storage adapters to PCIe2 or PCIe3 SAS Raid storage adapters, ensure that the hard disk drives (HDD) and solid state drives (SDD) are at the current, supported code levels.

Note: The RAID sets remain unprotected during this conversion.

Check the IBM® prerequisites site for the supported Operating System (OS) levels. Also, ensure that the HDD and SSD drives at the current supported code levels.

Note: Once this conversion is performed, the devices are not useable on the previous PCI-X or PCIe SAS Raid storage adapters unless they are reformatted.
