You can use the Integrated Virtualization Manager to define a shared memory pool, if the managed system
supports the PowerVM® Active Memory™ Sharing technology for using shared memory.
A shared memory pool is a defined collection of physical memory
blocks that are managed as a single memory pool by the hypervisor.
When you define a shared memory pool, you specify the Assigned memory
and the Paging storage pool attributes for the memory pool. The assigned
memory value determines the size of the memory pool. The paging storage
pool attribute determines which storage pool provides paging space
devices for shared memory partitions that use the shared memory pool.
Before you start, complete the following tasks:
- Enter the activation code for the PowerVM Enterprise Edition. For instructions, see Entering the activation code
for PowerVM Editions using the Integrated Virtualization Manager.
The ability to share memory among multiple
logical partitions is known as the PowerVM Active Memory Sharing technology.
The PowerVM Active Memory Sharing technology is available with the PowerVM Enterprise Edition for which you must obtain and enter a PowerVM Editions activation code.
- Ensure that your configuration meets the configuration requirements
for shared memory. To review the requirements, see Configuration requirements for shared memory.
- Complete the required preparation tasks. For instructions, see Preparing to configure shared
memory.
- Use any role other than View Only to perform this task. The View
Only role can view the properties, but it cannot change them.
To define the shared memory pool, complete the following
steps in the Integrated Virtualization Manager:
- From the navigation area, select View/Modify
Shared Memory Pool under Partition Management. The Memory tab of the View/Modify
System Properties page is displayed.
- Click Define Shared Memory Pool.
- Specify the amount of physical memory that you want to
assign to the shared memory pool.
- Select a storage pool that is logical volume-based to act
as the paging storage pool for the shared memory pool. The storage pool that you select as the paging storage pool provides
paging space devices for logical partitions that use shared memory.
- Click OK. The creation
of the shared memory pool is marked as pending.
- Click Apply to complete the creation.
