Preparing the source and destination management partitions for partition mobility

You need to verify that the source and destination management partitions are configured correctly so that you can successfully move the mobile partition from the source server to the destination server. This includes verifying the version of the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) and activating the PowerVM® Enterprise Edition hardware feature.

To prepare the source and destination management partitions for active or inactive partition mobility, complete the following tasks.

Table 1. Preparation tasks for the IVM
IVM planning tasks Active mobility task Inactive mobility task Information resources
1. Ensure that the IVM that manages the source server and the IVM that manages the destination server meet the following version requirements:
  • If the source server, the destination server, or both servers are POWER7® processor-based servers, ensure that the IVM or IVMs that manage the servers are at version 2.1.2 with fix pack 22.1 and service pack 1, or later.
  • If the source server or the destination server is a POWER6® processor-based server, ensure that the IVM that manages that server is at version 2.1.2 with fix pack 22, or later.

2. Ensure that the PowerVM Enterprise Edition hardware feature is activated. X X Entering the activation code for PowerVM Editions with the Integrated Virtualization Manager
3. If the mobile partition uses shared memory, verify that the shared memory pool on the destination server contains a paging space device that satisfies the size requirements of the mobile partition. X X Verifying that the destination shared memory pool contains an available paging space device
