Removing a Slimline media device in the 8412-EAD, 9117-MMB, 9117-MMC, 9117-MMD, 9179-MHB, 9179-MHC, or 9179-MHD with the system powered off

Learn to remove a media device with the power off.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to complete the steps for installing a Slimline media device.

Note: The 9117-MMB, 9117-MMC, 9117-MMD, 9179-MHB, 9179-MHC, and 9179-MHD support only one Slimline media device per system.

To remove a Slimline media device for the 8412-EAD, 9117-MMB, 9117-MMC, 9117-MMD, 9179-MHB, 9179-MHC, or 9179-MHD with the system or partition powered off, complete the following steps from the system or partition that controls the media device:

  1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For more information, see Enabling enclosure indicators and Control panel LEDs.
  2. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  3. If you are removing the media device as part of another procedure, continue to the next step. If you are removing the device because of a system failure, see Identifying a part.
  4. Remove any media from the drive.
  5. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping the system or logical partition.

    If you have created an IBM® i logical partition on your system, see Shutting down IBM i logical partitions to find instructions for powering off a system that has an IBM i logical partition.

    Attention: Media devices are fragile. Handle with care.
  6. Remove the front cover from the system. For instructions, see Removing the front cover from the the 8412-EAD, 9117-MMB, 9117-MMC, 9117-MMD, 9179-MHB, 9179-MHC, or 9179-MHD.
  7. Pull the terracotta lever (A) to the right and outward.
  8. Grasp the DVD drive (or filler) (B) and slide it out of the enclosure.
