Removing the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D power interlock switch with the power off

Use this procedure to remove the power interlock switch with the power off.

To ensure safety when servicing the system, the power interlock switch shuts down power to the system automatically when the service access cover is removed.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to remove the power interlock switch from the server. For instructions, see Removing a part using the Hardware Management Console.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to remove the power interlock switch:

  1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For more information, see Enabling enclosure indicators and Control panel LEDs.
  2. Use the service indicator light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to help identify the part. For instructions, see Identifying a failing part.
  3. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  4. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping a system or logical partition.
  5. Place the system in the service position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted model in the service position.
  6. Remove the service access cover. For instructions, see Removing the service access cover from a rack-mounted model.
  7. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords.
Note: A second optional power supply is available with this system. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

  8. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just before removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  9. Disconnect the signal cable from its attached location to the system board (A), as shown in Figure 1.
  10. The power interlock switch is attached to the inner right wall of the chassis. Pull the blue locking tab (B) under the switch and gently slide the mechanism rearward to unlatch it from the screw holds (C).

If you want to replace the power interlock switch, see Replacing the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D power interlock switch with the power off.
