Replacing GX adapters in the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD with the system power turned off

Learn how to replace GX adapters in the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD with the system power turned off.

If you are installing a new adapter, see Installing GX adapters in the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD with the system power turned off to obtain adapter slot locations and details of the supported adapters. Complete the following procedure if you are replacing the failed GX adapter in the system. You must have removed the failed GX adapter before you replace it with a new adapter. For instructions, see Removing GX adapters from the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD with the system power turned off.

Note: Removing or replacing this feature is a customer task. You can complete this task yourself, or contact a service provider to complete the task for you. You might be charged a fee by the service provider for this service.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to replace an adapter. For instructions, see Exchanging a part by using the Hardware Management Console.

If your system is not managed by an HMC, complete the following steps to replace the adapter:

  1. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  2. Carefully grasp the new adapter assembly by the plastic latches (A), shown in Figure 1 and align the adapter assembly with the slot and its connector on the system midplane.
  3. Slowly slide the adapter along the glides until it stops.
Attention: When you install an adapter into the system, be sure that it is completely and correctly seated in its connector.
  4. With the adapter cover (A) in the open position, slide the adapter into the slot until it locks.
  5. Rotate the adapter cover (A) in the direction shown in Figure 1, and push it toward the card until the locking tab snaps into place.

  6. Connect the cable connector (B) to the GX adapter port.
  7. Reconnect all power and signal cables to their respective connectors.
  8. Close the rear rack door.
  9. If you are installing the adapter as part of another procedure, return to that procedure now. If your service actions are complete, continue with the following steps:
    1. Start the system. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
    2. Verify the installed part:
      • If you replaced the part because of a service action, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying a repair.
      • If you installed the part for any other reason, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying the installed part.
