Installing GX adapters in an 8233-E8B or 8236-E8C with the system power turned off

Learn about installing GX adapters with the system power turned off.

Note: Installing this feature is a customer task. You can complete this task yourself, or contact a service provider to complete the task for you. You might be charged a fee by the service provider for this service.

To install an adapter, complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
Note: Do not disconnect the power cords at this time.
  2. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping the system or logical partition.
  3. On a rack-mounted system unit, open the back rack door.
  4. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system.
Note: This system is equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been disconnected.

  5. If necessary, disconnect any cables connected to the adapter at the rear of the system.
  6. Place the system in the service position. For instructions, see Placing a 8233-E8B or 8236-E8C system in the service position.
  7. Remove the access cover. For instructions, see Removing the service access cover from a 8233-E8B or 8236-E8C system.
  8. Locate the appropriate slot in which to install the GX adapter. If there is only one processor card, you must use a Feature Code (FC) 5616 (GX+) adapter and choose slot P1-C8 as shown in Figure 1. If two processor cards are installed, P1-C7 also supports a GX adapter. To use the FC 5609 (GX++) DDR adapter, two or more processor cards are required.
    Restriction:
    • GX Dual-port 12X Channel Attach FC 5616 (GX+) is only supported in slot P1-C8.
    • GX Dual-port 12X Channel Attach FC 5609 (GX++) is supported only in slot P1-C7 and requires that the system contains two or more processor cards.
    • Both FC 5616 and FC 5609 can be installed if the system contains two or more processor cards.

  9. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  10. If necessary, remove the existing adapter assembly by sliding the retainers (A) into the open position. Unlatch the blue locking latches (B) on the adapter assembly by pressing them together and pulling them up into the open position, and then lift the adapter out of the system. For instructions on removing a PCI adapter, see Removing a PCI adapter with the power off.

  11. If you do not need to remove an existing adapter assembly, slide the retainers (A) into the open position, as shown in the previous figure.
  12. Carefully grasp the new adapter assembly by its top edge and align the adapter assembly with the slot and its connector on the system backplane.
  13. Press the adapter assembly firmly into its connector.
Attention: When you install an adapter into the system, be sure that it is completely and correctly seated in its connector.
  14. Seat the adapter, as appropriate for your model. Push down evenly on both of the blue locking latches (A) at the same time until the latches snap into place, indicating that the adapter assembly is seated correctly and locked into position. Slide the retainers (B) into the closed position.

  16. Swing the cable retention bracket towards the chassis and push the bracket fastener (B) into the chassis opening to secure the bracket.
  17. Replace the service access cover. For instructions, see Installing the service access cover on a 8233-E8B or 8236-E8C system.
  18. If you are working on a rack-mounted system unit, ensure that the system cables are routed through the cable-management arm correctly.
  19. Place the system in the operating position. For instructions, see Placing a 8233-E8B or 8236-E8C system in the operating position.
  20. Reconnect all power and signal cables to their respective connectors. Ensure that the GX adapter cables (C), shown in Figure 4, are routed through the appropriate cable retention brackets to prevent excessive cable movement.
  21. Close the back rack door or the back system door.
  22. Start the system. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
  23. Verify that the installed part is working correctly. For instructions, see Verifying the installed part.
