Installing a SAS or SATA media device in the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D

Use this procedure to install a serial-attached SCSI (SAS) or a Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) media device.

Attention: If you are servicing a failing part, see the service procedures for Removing a SAS or SATA media device from the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D. The following procedure is intended for installing a new or an upgraded media device.
Before installing or replacing a feature, ensure that the software required to support the feature is installed on your system. For information about software prerequisites, see IBM Prerequisite. If the required software is not installed, see the following websites to download it, and then install it before continuing:

If your system is managed by the an HMC), use the HMC to complete the steps for installing a feature in the server. For instructions, see Installing a part by using the Hardware Management Console.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to install a media device from the system or partition that controls the media device:

  1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For instructions, see Control panel LEDs.
  2. Use the service indicator light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to help identify the part. For instructions, see Identifying a part.
  3. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  4. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping a system or logical partition.
  5. Remove the front cover:
  6. For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the service position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted model into the service position.
  7. Remove the service access cover:
  8. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords.
Note: This system is equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

  9. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  10. Remove the bezel filler and tape drive filler, if present.
  11. Install the rails onto the media device by using the two small screws included with your media device. The rails must be placed on each side of the media device. Screw the rails into the side of the media device by using the lower screw hole.
  12. Connect the SAS cable to the drive.
  13. Push the media device (B) into the system until you feel the latches (C) lock in place as shown in the following figure.

  14. Attach the media-device connections to the system backplane.
    CAUTION:
Ensure that you properly orient the connectors to the socket to prevent misplugging the connectors and to prevent damage to the drive and system backplane.

  15. Replace the service access cover:
  16. Replace the front cover:
  17. Connect the power cords to the system.
  18. Start the system. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
  19. Verify the installed part:
    • If you replaced the part because of a failure, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying a repair.
    • If you installed the part for any other reason, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying the installed part.
