Removing memory risers from the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD

Use this procedure for removing a memory riser (also known as a memory card).

If your system is managed by an HMC, use the HMC to complete the steps for removing a part from the system. For instructions, see Removing a part by using the HMC

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to remove a memory riser:

  1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For more information, see Enabling enclosure indicators and Control panel LEDs.
  2. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  3. Use the service indicator light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to help identify the part. For instructions, see Identifying a part.
  4. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping a system or logical partition.
  5. Disconnect all power cords from the unit you are servicing.

Note: The 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system is equipped with a mandatory second power supply. Before you continue with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been disconnected.

  6. Place the system in the service position. For instructions, see Placing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system into the service position.
  7. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  8. Press the push button (A) on the planar to turn on the memory riser rollup LEDs as shown in the following figure.

  9. Remove the memory riser from the system by pulling the locking tabs (A) into the open position and lift the memory riser out of the system, as shown in the following figure.
