Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is an international standard that defines a high-speed networking method to transport any mixture of voice, video, and traditional computer data across local, municipal, and wide-area networks (LANs, MANs, and WANs).

ATM adapters provide full-duplex connectivity for RS/6000® servers or clients using permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) and switched virtual circuits (SVCs). The PVC and SVC implementations are designed to be compliant with the ATM Forum specifications. The maximum number of virtual circuits supported depends on the adapter. Most adapters support at least 1024 virtual circuits.
