System adapter identification

DS8000 series uses high-speed Fibre Channel protocol (FCP) for Remote Mirror and Copy connectivity. The FCP adapter ports are specified by their system adapter identification (SAID).

WWNN and WWPN determination

This section contains information about the worldwide node name (WWNN) and worldwide port name (WWPN) to help determine host port numbers on adapters that are connected to a storage system.

A WWNN is used to uniquely identify a device in a storage area network (SAN). Each IBM storage device has its own unique WWNN. Each DS8000 system has a unique WWNN. A WWPN is a unique identifier for each Fibre Channel port that is presented to a storage area network (SAN). Each port on an IBM storage device has a unique and persistent WWPN.

IBM System Storage devices use persistent WWPN. This means if a host adapter (HA) in an IBM System Storage device is replaced, the new HA presents the same WWPN as the old HA. IBM System Storage uses a methodology whereby each WWPN is a subset of the WWNN. This means that if you know the WWPN of a port, you can easily match it to the WWNN of the storage device that owns that port.

A WWPN is always 16 hexadecimal characters, which are 8 bytes. Three of these bytes are used for the vendor ID. The position of the vendor ID within the WWPN varies based on the format ID of the WWPN. Table 1 describes the WWNN and WWPN format for the ESS and DS8000 system.
Table 1. WWNN and WWPN determination
Machine type WWNN WWPN
2105 (IBM Enterprise Storage Server, ESS) 50:05:07:63:00:C0:xx:xx 50:05:07:63:00:yy:xx:xx
2107, 242x (DS8000) 50:05:07:63:0z:FF:zx:xx 50:05:07:63:0z:yy:yx:xx
Notes:
  • The 242x machine types include models 941, 94E, 951, 95E, 961 and 96E.
  • x is determined by manufacturing and is unique to each storage system.
  • y is determined by physical position within the storage system.
  • z is determined by manufacturing.

The WWNN for DS8000 series is 50:05:07:63:0z:FF:Cx:xx or 50:05:07:63:0z:FF:Dx:xx. The DS8000 WWPN is a subset of the system WWNN, which is based on 50:05:07:63:0z:YY:Yx:xx.

Use the z and x:xx values from the WWNN and use the YY:Y location, which is derived from the port location to understand the values included in the tables in Remote Mirror and Copy connectivity and System adapter identification — legacy connections.

There are no differences for determining the WWPN between DS8100, DS8300, DS8700, and DS8800. To display the WWPN for a DS8000 system, see Displaying the WWPN by using DS CLI commands.

Displaying the WWPN by using DS CLI commands

To display the WWNN of the system ID (IBM.2107-7503460), issue the lssi command. For example:
dscli> lssi IBM.2107-7503461
Name ID Storage System Model WWNN State ESSNet
====================================================================================
- IBM.2107-7503461 IBM.2107-7503460 922 5005076303FFC08F Online Enabled
To display a list of all I/O ports that are installed on that same system ID (IBM.2107-7503460), issue the lsioport command. For example:
dscli> lsioport -dev IBM.2107-7503461

ID WWPN State Type topo portgrp
============================================================================
I0000 500507630300008F Online Fibre Channel-SW SCSI-FCP 0
I0001 500507630304008F Online Fibre Channel-SW SCSI-FCP 0
I0002 500507630308008F Online Fibre Channel-SW SCSI-FCP 0
I0003 500507630300C08F Online Fibre Channel-SW SCSI-FCP 0

Each I/O port has a unique port ID. For example, if the number in storage system is 08:0 then the WWPN is: 50:05:07:6z:08:0x:xx. The z and x:xx combination are unique for each system. The port ID in the lsioport command is also used as the SAID for FICON and remote mirror and copy path establishment.

DS8700 and DS8800 WWPN changes

The following information is specific to WWPN changes on DS8800. However, these changes also affect DS8700 that were built after December 2011. (These changes do not affect existing storage systems, only storage systems that are shipped new from the plant after mid December 2011.)

Remote Mirror and Copy connectivity

When you create remote mirror and copy paths over FCP links, you must specify the SAIDs of the source (or local) and target (or remote) storage ports.

The following eight tables shows the I/O port, SAID value, and the location segment of the WWPN for each possible port. The I/O port value starts with the letter I and is in the format IEESP where EE is the enclosure number (minus 1), S is the slot number (minus 1) and P is the port number (ranging 0 - 7). The SAID number is the same as the I/O port number except that it does not start with the letter I. The WWPN location segment is in the format yy:y, which is part of the full 16-digit WWPN (50:05:07:63:0z:yy:yx:xx).

Note: The WWPN location segments of slots 1, 2, 4, and 5 (shown bold) pertain to DS8700 and DS8800 manufactured after December 2011.

The SAIDs shown in the following eight tables are used for mirror and copy paths between 4-port cards on any DS8000 model or between DS8700 and DS8800 (by using 4-port and 8-port cards). A special handling situation exists when an 8-port card on DS8800 is detected by any model of ESS800, DS8100, and DS8300.

Note: In the following tables, the WWPNs shown in bold have increased by 1 for DS8700 and DS8800 manufactured after December 2011.

System adapter identification — legacy connections

There is a special handling case when an ESS800, DS8100, or DS8300 establishes a path to the bottom 4 ports of an 8-port card on a DS8800. The SAIDs detected by the ES800, DS8100 and DS8300 is different from the SAIDs shown in the following eight tables. They will instead be detected as shown in the following eight tables. Only the SAIDs are different. The I/O ports and WWPNs remain the same.
Note: It is recommended that the top four ports on the DS8800 8-port adapters be used for Metro Mirror, and Global Mirror connections when used for secondary connections to ESS, DS8300, and DS8700 as primaries.
