Unbounded analytics

You can use Unbounded analytics of Instana to generate new insights from all unsampled and high-cardinality data. The tag-based filtering, grouping, and visualization unlock value for all your DevOps tasks.

The tag-based query builder with preset data sources and tags eliminates the need for you to learn a complex new query language.

Working with Unbounded analytics

To use Unbounded analytics in the Instana UI, complete the following steps:

  1. From the sidebar of the Instana UI, select Analytics. The Analytics page is displayed.

  2. To view a list of available data sources, on the Analytics page, click the arrow on the Applications breadcrumb trail.

  3. From the list, select any of the following data sources for analysis:

Except the infrastructure and profiles pages, all other Analytics pages display the query builder with filters and groups. You can view the KPIs of your data in graphical format in the chart section. The details of the data that is collected for the selected time frame are presented in the summary table. You can use the filter options in the sidebar to filter your data and analyze it.

Fast query mode

By default, the Fast query mode is enabled when you analyze calls or traces. In the Fast query mode, Instana runs the query against a subset of the data if running the query against the full data set for the selected time frame takes too long.

If the query is not run against the full data set, you can view an indicator for approximate data.

You can use the approximate result to reduce the selected time frame and speed up the query process.

Approximate data

You can view the approximate data indicator when the query is run against a subset of the data instead of against the full data set. This situation can happen when the Fast query mode is enabled or due to the Data retention policy when historical data is analyzed.

FAQ

Why does the Analytics page display no data?

Data is not displayed in the Analytics page in the following cases:

  • Traces and calls: If no agent is installed, the agent does not run in the APM mode, or monitored processes do not receive calls, and data is not collected.

To check whether an agent is installed and running, complete any one of the following steps:

    • From the sidebar of the Instana UI, click Infrastructure to view any host on the infrastructure map that has an agent.
    • From the sidebar of the Instana UI, click More > Agents to see a list of installed agents. If no agents are listed, see Installing Instana agent.
  • Website monitoring (page loads, resources, HTTP requests, and JS errors): If Instana does not monitor the website, a tracking script is added incorrectly, or services are not getting triggered due to a lack of website activity, and data is not collected.

For more information about configuring website monitoring, see website monitoring.

Why does the tag suggestion not show a value (for example, a hostname or an endpoint name)?

Instana suggests the tag value by doing a quick scan of a subset of calls in the selected time window. If no or a few calls are made to a host or an endpoint during that time frame, the hostname or endpoint name might not appear in the suggestion. In this case, you need to enter the value manually.
