Importing PST files

You can export Microsoft Outlook emails into a PST file, and then import the PST file into Classification Workbench. Create a PST file from email messages that are stored in one or more Outlook folders.

About this task

When you import email messages in PST format, Classification Workbench can categorize the messages according to the Outlook folders that contained them. For example, you might have folders in your Outlook Inbox for messages about different topics. The folder names would represent message categories.

Attention: Start of change Microsoft Outlook must be installed on the computer on which Classification Workbench is installed and set as the default email program. For example, complete the following steps on Microsoft Windows 7:
  1. Click Start > Default Programs. You can also find Default Programs on the All Control Panel Items page.
  2. In the list of programs, select Microsoft Outlook.
  3. Click Choose defaults for this program.
  4. Under MAPI, select Send mail.

Procedure

  1. Use Microsoft Outlook to export messages to a PST file.

    When you export the file from Microsoft Outlook, save it in the Personal Folder File (PST) format. Do not password protect your PST file.

    On the Outlook File menu, click Import and Export > Export to a file > Personal Folder File. Once you select the file type, select the folder. To export messages from several folders, select the main folder and click the "include subfolders" option before continuing with the procedure.

  2. Create a project by importing the PST file.

    When you import the file, Classification Workbench uses the folder names to apply the appropriate category to each message. The folder names become the values for the _Categories field in the imported content set.
