Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD disk drive backplane

If you removed the disk drive backplane as a part of another procedure, you might need to use the procedure in this section to replace the disk drive backplane.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to complete the steps for replacing the disk drive backplane in the server. For instructions, see Replacing a part by using the Hardware Management Console.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to replace the disk drive backplane:

  1. Perform the prerequisite tasks described in Before you begin.
  2. Install the disk drive backplane by completing the following steps:
    1. With the handles (A) in the fully extended position, align the disk drive backplane with the enclosure slot.
    2. Slide the disk drive backplane into the enclosure until it stops, and then rotate the handles in the direction shown to lock them in place.

  3. Install the DVD drive. For instructions, see Installing a Slimline media device in the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD with the system powered off.
  4. Install all the disk units and fillers. For instructions, see Installing a disk-drive filler in the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
  5. Install the RAID - dual IOA enablement card. For instructions, see Installing the 175 MB Cache RAID – Dual IOA Enablement card in the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
  6. Install the control panel and assembly. For instructions, see Installing or replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD control panel with the power off.
  7. Replace the front cover. For instructions, see Installing the front cover on the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
  8. Reconnect the power cords to the system. For instructions, see Connecting the power cords to the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
  9. Start the system or logical partition. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
  10. Do one of the following steps:
    1. If you replaced the backplane as part of another procedure, return to that procedure now.
    2. If you replaced the backplane because it was not operational, verify that the new resource is operational. For instructions, see Verifying the installed part.
