Installing a Slimline media device in the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D

Use this procedure to install a Slimline media device.

Attention: If you are servicing a failing part, see the service procedures for Removing a Slimline media device from the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D. The following procedure is intended for installing a new or upgraded media device.
Before installing or replacing a feature, ensure that the software required to support the feature is installed on your system. For information about software prerequisites, see IBM Prerequisite. If the required software is not installed, see the following websites to download it, and then install it before continuing:

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to complete the steps for installing a feature in the server. For instructions, see Installing a feature by using the Hardware Management Console.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to install a media device from the system or partition that controls the media device:

  1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For more information, see Enabling enclosure indicators and Control panel LEDs.
  2. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  3. Use the service indicator light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to help identify the part. For instructions, see Identifying a part.
  4. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords.
Note: This system might be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

  5. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  6. Find the package that contains the new media device and remove it from the static-protective package.
  7. Remove the filler, if present.
  8. Align the media device with the Slimline media bay, and support the bottom of the device.
  9. Confirm that the bracket with the tab (A) is installed in the device. This bracket is not attached with screws, clips, or other fastening devices; it is held in place by tabs and friction.
  10. Push the device (B) fully into the system as shown in the following figure. To ensure that the device is held firmly in place, push down on the lever (A).

The slimline device should be flush with the front of the unit.
