Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system processor assembly

Learn how to remove the system processor assembly from a server to replace a failing part or as part of another service procedure.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to remove the system processor assembly. For instructions, see Removing a part by using the HMC.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to remove the system processor assembly:

Attention: The system processor assembly requires two people to remove from the system.
  1. Complete the prerequisite tasks that are described in Before you begin; however do not disconnect the power cords now.
  2. Turn on the blue system LED to identify the system you are working on. For instructions, see Enabling enclosure indicators.
  3. Shut down the partitions and power off the system.

This FRU cannot be serviced concurrently. Every partition must be shut down, and the system must be powered off to continue the repair. Authorization must come from the customer to shut down all running partitions and to power off the system. If the customer does not allow the partitions to be shut down or the system to be powered off, delay the service procedure. If the customer is using a secondary management console to manage the system, ensure that the customer is not powering on the system at this time.

  4. Verify that system power is off by checking for a flashing green LED.
  5. Disconnect the power cords.
    1. Use the leftmost LED on the rear of the enclosure, the blue enclosure ID LED to verify that you are working on the correct system.
    2. Open the rear rack door on the unit you are servicing.
    3. Identify the system unit that you are servicing in the rack.
    4. Disconnect all power cords from the unit you are servicing.

  6. Remove the front covers. For instructions, see Removing the front cover from an 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system.
  7. Place the system into the service position. For instructions, see Placing the rack-mounted 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system into the service position.
  8. Prepare to remove the system processor assembly:
    1. Using a slotted screwdriver, loosen both the captive screws (A), if present. See Figure 2.
    2. Rotate the handles (B) in the direction that is shown until they stop.
    3. Hold and pull both the handles and begin sliding the system processor assembly out of the enclosure until the side slide release buttons lock into place.

  9. Remove the system processor assembly:
    1. With the rails extended and locked in position, and two people (one person on each side of the system processor assembly), slide the card release tabs (C), and lift out the system processor assembly by using the handles on each side. See Figure 3.
Attention: The system processor assembly weighs 20.4 kg (45 lb). Use caution when you are sliding the system processor assembly out of the enclosure. Use all four side handles to lift the enclosure.
    2. Place the system processor assembly on an electrostatic discharge (ESD) surface in an area with space to allow for removal of components.

  10. Push in the system processor assembly rails:
    1. Lift the slide release buttons (one on each side) to unlock the rails (D). See Figure 4.
    2. Push both the rails back into the enclosure (E).

  11. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  12. Remove the system processor modules. Label the location of each system processor module. For instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system processor modules.
Attention: After the system processor assembly is removed, the system processor modules must be installed into the same locations from which they were removed in the replacement system processor assembly.
  13. Remove the processor voltage regulator modules. Label the location of each processor voltage regulator module. For instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD voltage regulator module.
Attention: After the system processor assembly is removed, the processor voltage regulator modules must be installed into the same locations from which they were removed in the replacement system processor assembly.
  14. Remove the memory voltage regulator module. For instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD memory voltage regulator module.
  15. Remove the memory risers. Label the location of each memory riser. For instructions, see Removing memory risers for the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
Attention: After the system processor assembly is removed, the memory risers must be installed into the same locations from which they were removed in the replacement system processor assembly.
  16. Remove the thermal power management device (TPMD) card. For instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD TPMD card.
